Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Fadaynahu (وَفَدَيْنَاهُ): We ransomed him — meaning We saved him from the sacrifice by providing a substitute.
- Bidhibhin (بِذِبْحٍ): With a sacrificial animal — specifically, a ram.
- Azeem (عَظِيمٍ): Great or mighty — referring to the ram's magnificent size and, more profoundly, its immense spiritual significance.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) demonstrated his unparalleled obedience and devotion by laying his beloved son Ismail down for sacrifice in submission to Allah's command, Allah — in His infinite mercy and wisdom — intervened at the perfect moment. He ransomed Ismail with a magnificent ram, a great sacrificial animal that became the substitute for the boy's life. This ram was not merely large in physical stature; its greatness lay in the fact that it was chosen by Allah Himself to be the ransom for a prophet's son, making it a symbol of divine mercy and a testament to the beauty of unwavering faith.
This verse captures the profound lesson that Allah never abandons those who place their complete trust in Him. When Ibrahim proved his willingness to sacrifice what he loved most for the sake of Allah, Allah responded with a mercy that exceeded all expectations — replacing the sacrifice of a son with the sacrifice of an animal. This act established the eternal tradition of sacrifice (Qurbani) in Islam, which Muslims continue to practice today during Eid al-Adha, commemorating this very event.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect deeply on this moment: Ibrahim was willing to give up his most precious treasure — his long-awaited son — without hesitation. And what did Allah give him in return? Not only did He spare Ismail, but He honored Ibrahim with a legacy that would be remembered and celebrated by billions of believers until the end of time. This is the nature of Allah: when you give something sincerely for His sake, He returns it to you multiplied in blessings, or replaces it with something far better. The ram was "great" not because of its size, but because it carried the weight of a divine promise — that Allah never lets sincere sacrifice go unrewarded. Let this inspire you to trust Allah wholeheartedly in your own life. Whatever you give up for His sake — whether it be time, wealth, comfort, or desires — know that Allah's compensation is always greater, His mercy always precedes His judgment, and His love for His servants is beyond anything we can imagine. This is the beauty of Islam: a religion that teaches us that even in our greatest trials, Allah's relief is always near, and His mercy always triumphs.
