Translation — Tafsir
Meanings of Key Words:
- ص (Sad): One of the disjointed letters (huruf muqatta'ah) that appear at the beginning of some Quranic chapters. Its full meaning is known only to Allah, though scholars note it serves as a challenge to the Arabs, who were masters of eloquence, to produce something like the Quran.
- وَالْقُرْآنِ ذِي الذِّكْرِ (By the Quran, full of remembrance): The Quran that contains profound reminders, admonitions, and guidance for humanity. "Dhikr" here means the reminder of Allah's commands, warnings, and the path to success in this life and the Hereafter.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah begins this chapter with the letter "Sad," one of the disjointed letters that appear at the start of several Quranic chapters. These letters draw the listener's attention to the miraculous nature of the Quran, which is composed of the very letters the Arabs used in their speech—yet they could never produce anything comparable to it.
Then Allah swears an oath by the Quran, describing it as "full of remembrance"—meaning it is a book that reminds people of what benefits them in their worldly affairs and their eternal life. It reminds them of Allah's oneness, His prophets, His laws, the reality of death, the Day of Judgment, and the consequences of their deeds. The oath here is meant to affirm a profound truth: that the matter is not as the polytheists claimed. They assumed that Allah had partners, associates, or that the message of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was false. Allah swears by this glorious Quran that such beliefs are utterly wrong—there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, and the Quran is His decisive proof.
This verse serves as a powerful opening that establishes the Quran's authority and its role as a living reminder for all of humanity. It calls upon every reader to pause, reflect, and recognize that this book is not ordinary speech—it is a divine address filled with mercy, wisdom, and guidance. When you open the Quran, you are not merely reading words; you are receiving a message from your Creator, who knows what is in your heart and what will truly benefit you. Let this verse inspire you to approach the Quran with reverence and an open heart, for it is the ultimate source of light in the darkness of this world, and it will intercede for its reader on the Day when no other intercession will avail.
