Word Meanings:
- ʿIzzah (عِزَّةٍ): Pride, arrogance, and a sense of false superiority that prevents one from submitting to the truth.
- Shiqāq (شِقَاقٍ): Opposition, hostility, and discord — specifically, stubbornly turning away from and fighting against the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his message.
Explanation of the Verse:
After the Quran challenges the disbelievers with the revelation of the Mighty Book, this verse exposes their true state. Far from being guided or humble, those who reject the faith are entrenched in arrogance and stubborn opposition. Their "izzah" is not a noble honor but a deluded pride that makes them look down upon the truth and refuse to accept it. Their "shiqaq" is their active hostility and relentless conflict against the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the believers. They are not merely indifferent — they are at war with the divine message, driven by ego and enmity rather than reason or evidence.
This verse reveals a profound psychological truth: the disbelievers' rejection is not based on lack of proof, but on the barriers of pride and partisanship. The Quran presents itself with clarity and wisdom, yet their hearts are sealed by arrogance. They see the truth but refuse it because accepting it would mean submitting their egos to God. Their opposition to the Prophet is not because he brought falsehood — for his character and message were undeniably sincere — but because his call challenged their status, traditions, and self-importance.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on this verse as a mirror for your own heart. Pride is the first sin ever committed — when Satan refused to bow to Adam out of arrogance. And it is pride that keeps people from Islam even today. The Quran invites you to break free from this trap: humility before the Creator is not weakness, but the highest honor. When you submit to Allah, you are not losing yourself — you are finding your true purpose. The disbelievers' "izzah" was an illusion that led to their ruin, while true honor lies in obeying the One who owns all honor. Let this verse inspire you to check your heart: is there any trace of arrogance preventing you from accepting the truth? Islam is a call to peace — peace with God, with yourself, and with humanity. Answer that call with humility, and you will find a dignity that no worldly pride can ever match.
