Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse narrates a remarkable event in the life of Prophet Dawud (David, peace be upon him). Two men suddenly entered his private place of worship (mihrab) in an unusual manner—climbing over the wall rather than entering through the door—which startled and frightened him. Their unexpected intrusion was a test from Allah, and the Prophet's natural human reaction was fear.
Upon seeing his alarm, the two men quickly reassured him: "Do not fear." They explained that they were two disputants, one of whom had wronged the other. They did not come to harm him but sought his wise and just arbitration. They pleaded with him: "Judge between us with truth and justice, do not deviate from fairness, and guide us to the straight path."
This scene highlights several profound lessons:
- The humility of Prophets: Even a great king and prophet like Dawud could be startled like any human being, showing that prophethood does not remove human nature but elevates it with divine guidance.
- The pursuit of justice: The disputants recognized Dawud's authority and wisdom, and they explicitly requested a judgment based on truth, not favoritism or personal inclination. Their words "do not deviate" show their deep desire for impartiality.
- Seeking guidance: They did not merely want a legal ruling; they asked to be guided to the right path—a beautiful expression of their spiritual sincerity, acknowledging that true justice is part of Allah's straight path.
This story is a timeless reminder for all believers: when we seek resolution for our disputes, we must approach with humility, accept the truth even if it goes against us, and always ask Allah to guide us to what is right. It also teaches leaders and judges to be fearless in upholding justice, while remaining approachable and compassionate. The verse inspires us to love justice, hate oppression, and always turn to Allah's guidance in every matter of our lives—for He is the ultimate Judge who never errs.
