Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Al-Khizy (الْخِزْيَ): Disgrace, humiliation, shame, and public exposure to dishonor.
- Adhab al-Akhirah (عَذَابُ الْآخِرَةِ): The punishment of the Hereafter, which is far greater and more severe than any worldly punishment.
- Law kanu ya'lamun (لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ): "If only they had known" — a conditional phrase expressing regret and the missed opportunity to learn a lesson.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The verse refers to the nations before you, O Messenger, who rejected their prophets and denied the truth. They were not punished immediately, but when the decree came, Allah made them taste disgrace and humiliation in this worldly life — through defeat, destruction, captivity, and public shame. Their punishment in the Hereafter, however, is far greater, more intense, and everlasting. If only those who now persist in disbelief and mockery knew the reality of what awaits them — that the worldly trials they see are but a fraction of what is to come — they would have taken heed and turned back to their Lord in repentance.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every generation: Allah's justice is swift in this life for those who persist in arrogance and falsehood, but the ultimate reckoning is in the Hereafter, where no deed is overlooked. The worldly punishment is a mercy in disguise — a wake-up call — while the punishment of the Hereafter is the true and permanent consequence. If people truly understood this, they would race toward obedience and away from sin.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. Allah, in His infinite mercy, often shows us small signs of consequence in this world — a loss, a hardship, a humiliation — not to destroy us, but to remind us and bring us back to Him. Yet how many of us ignore these gentle warnings? The Hereafter is real, and its punishment is beyond our imagination. But equally, its reward is beyond our dreams. Do not wait until you taste disgrace in this life or face the greater punishment in the next. Turn to Allah now, with sincerity, and He will replace your fear with peace, your disgrace with honor, and your sins with forgiveness. The door of repentance is open — do not let it close before you.
