Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Sayyi'at (سَيِّئَات): The evil consequences and punishments resulting from one's deeds.
- Ma kasabu (مَا كَسَبُوا): What they earned or committed of sins, disbelief, and wrongdoing.
- Zalamu (ظَلَمُوا): Those who wronged themselves through disbelief and disobedience.
- Mu'jizin (مُعْجِزِينَ): Those who can escape or frustrate Allah's power — i.e., they cannot flee from His punishment.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The verse begins by affirming a universal divine law that has applied to every nation throughout history: when people commit evil deeds — whether disbelief, polytheism, or transgression — the consequences of those deeds inevitably catch up with them. The phrase "So the evil consequences of what they earned afflicted them" refers to the punishment that struck the previous nations who rejected their messengers and mocked the truth. They were seized by humiliation and torment in this very world, as a direct result of their own actions — not as an injustice from Allah, but as a natural and just recompense for what their hands had sent forth.
Then the verse turns to the contemporaries of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — the disbelievers of Makkah who persisted in oppression and arrogance. Allah declares with absolute certainty: "And those who have wronged among these [people] — the evil consequences of what they earned will afflict them." This is both a warning and a promise. Just as the nations of old were destroyed for their sins, these oppressors would not escape a similar fate. The verse closes with a decisive statement: "And they will not cause failure [to Allah]" — meaning they cannot escape Allah's grasp, nor can they weaken His power or flee from His justice. No matter how strong, wealthy, or influential they may be, Allah's decree will overtake them.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every generation: the law of cause and effect in the moral realm is as certain as the laws of the physical world. Whoever sows evil shall reap its consequences. But there is also a merciful dimension — the verse implies that those who wrong themselves can still turn back in repentance before the punishment arrives, just as the door of forgiveness remained open for those who heeded the warning.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder deeply on this divine principle. The universe operates on justice, and the Creator who set the sun and moon in their courses has also set a moral order that cannot be violated without consequence. Yet Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given us the opportunity to correct our course before it is too late. The previous nations were destroyed only after persistent rejection and defiance. But you — you who read these words today — have the chance to return to your Lord, to abandon wrongdoing, and to embrace the light of faith. Do not wait until the consequences arrive, for when they do, regret will be of no avail. The gates of repentance are open now; enter them before they close, and let the warning of this verse be the turning point in your journey toward Allah's pleasure and eternal success.
