Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yabsutu – He expands, enlarges, or makes abundant.
- Ar-Rizq – Provision, sustenance, or livelihood.
- Yaqdiru – He restricts, tightens, or measures out with precision.
Explanation of the Verse:
Have these people not come to know, with certainty, that the abundance or scarcity of provision is not a sign of Allah’s love or anger toward a person? Indeed, Allah, in His infinite wisdom and justice, expands the sustenance of whom He wills among His servants—whether they are righteous or wicked—as a test: will they be grateful and obedient, or will they become arrogant and disobedient? And He restricts the provision of whom He wills as another form of trial: will they remain patient and content with His decree, or will they complain and fall into discontent?
This is a profound reality that many people misunderstand. They see a wealthy person and assume he is favored by Allah, or they see a poor person and assume he is rejected. But the truth is far deeper than mere appearances. The expansion and restriction of provision are not random; they are deliberate acts of divine wisdom, each carrying a purpose and a lesson.
In this very alternation—the giving and the withholding, the abundance and the scarcity—there are clear signs and undeniable proofs for people who truly believe. It is the believers who reflect upon these signs and draw the right conclusions: that Allah alone is the Provider, that His wisdom governs all affairs, and that every situation—whether ease or hardship—is an opportunity to draw closer to Him. The disbelievers, however, pass by these signs with their eyes wide open yet their hearts sealed, failing to grasp the profound truth before them.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on your own life. Have you ever wondered why some people have more than they need while others struggle to make ends meet? Why does the righteous person sometimes face poverty while the wicked enjoys luxury? This is not a flaw in the universe—it is a deliberate design from the All-Wise Creator. He tests some with wealth to see if they will share and remain humble, and He tests others with scarcity to see if they will remain patient and trusting.
So do not measure Allah’s love by the size of your bank account, and do not measure His anger by the weight of your hardships. Instead, measure your own heart: Are you grateful in times of ease? Are you patient in times of difficulty? These are the true signs of faith. And know that every believer who reflects on this divine pattern will find in it a gateway to deeper trust in Allah and greater peace in the soul. Let this verse be a reminder that your provision is already written, your test is already designed, and your Lord is watching how you respond. Respond with faith, and you will find the doors of contentment and inner peace wide open before you.
