Word Meanings:

  • قَالَهَا (said it): This refers to the statement mentioned in the previous verse, where a person attributes their wealth and blessings to their own knowledge or merit, rather than to Allah’s grace.
  • الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ (those before them): The disbelieving nations of the past, such as Qarun (Korah), who boasted that his wealth was due to his own knowledge.
  • فَمَا أَغْنَى (so availed not): Did not benefit or protect in any way.
  • مَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ (what they used to earn): Their accumulated wealth, possessions, status, and achievements.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse serves as a powerful reminder and a stern warning to those who take pride in their worldly gains and believe that their success is purely a result of their own efforts, intelligence, or merit. Allah tells us that this very claim was made by those who came before — nations and individuals who were given wealth, power, and influence, yet when the punishment of Allah arrived, none of their earnings could shield them.

Think of Qarun, who was exceedingly wealthy, with treasures so vast that their keys alone were a burden for strong men. He said, "I have only been given this because of knowledge I possess." But what did his wealth and knowledge avail him? Allah caused the earth to swallow him and his home, and he had no one to help him — neither his riches, nor his status, nor his followers.

The lesson here is profound and timeless: wealth, children, status, and all worldly acquisitions are merely tests from Allah. They are not indicators of His pleasure, nor do they guarantee safety from His punishment. When the decree of Allah comes, no amount of money, power, or influence can repel it.

This verse also carries a beautiful call to humility and gratitude. Instead of attributing our blessings to our own cleverness, we should recognize that every good thing we have is from Allah alone. This recognition purifies the heart, protects us from arrogance, and draws us closer to our Creator. It reminds us that true success lies not in what we accumulate in this fleeting world, but in how we use those blessings to obey Allah, help others, and prepare for the eternal life to come.

So, dear reader, let this verse be a mirror for your soul. When you look at your achievements, do you feel proud and self-sufficient? Or do you feel grateful and humble before your Lord? The former leads to ruin, as it did for those before us. The latter leads to peace, contentment, and Allah’s eternal pleasure. Choose wisely, for the world is but a passing shadow, and the Hereafter is the true abode of everlasting life.

📜 Verse 48-52 — Az-Zumar

And there will appear to them the evils they had earned, and they will be enveloped by what they used to ridicule.
And when adversity touches man, he calls upon Us; then when We bestow on him a favor from Us, he says, "I have only been given it because of [my] knowledge." Rather, it is a trial, but most of them do not know.
Those before them had already said it, but they were not availed by what they used to earn.
And the evil consequences of what they earned struck them. And those who have wronged of these [people] will be afflicted by the evil consequences of what they earned; and they will not cause failure.
Do they not know that Allah extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]? Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.
