Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Zumaran (زُمَرًا): Groups, crowds, or companies marching one after another.
- Khazanatuha (خَزَنَتُهَا): The keepers/guards of Hellfire, the angels appointed over it.
- Haqqat (حَقَّتْ): Became obligatory, firmly established, and inevitably due.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Imagine the scene: the disbelievers—those who rejected Allah, His messengers, and His signs—are being driven toward Hellfire, not as individuals lost in chaos, but in organized, humiliated groups. They are herded like cattle, stripped of all pride and arrogance, moving unwillingly toward their final destination. This is not a random stumble; it is a deliberate, forceful march by the angels, a stark contrast to the honor and peace with which the righteous will be ushered into Paradise.
When they finally arrive at the gates of Hell, the timing is terrifyingly precise. The seven gates of Jahannam are flung open wide before them—not as a welcome, but as a horrifying spectacle to magnify their dread. The keepers of Hell, the stern and mighty angels appointed to guard it, meet them with a rebuke that cuts through their souls: "Did there not come to you messengers from among yourselves, reciting to you the verses of your Lord and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?"
This question is a powerful, undeniable testimony against them. The messengers were not aliens or distant beings—they were human beings from their own communities, speaking their own languages, sharing their own struggles. They recited Allah’s clear verses, called them to truth, and warned them of this very moment. The disbelievers cannot claim ignorance. They heard the message, understood it, and still chose to reject it.
At that moment, all excuses collapse. They answer with full admission: "Yes, indeed, the messengers came to us with the truth and warned us of this Day." They do not deny it. They acknowledge that the proof was established against them. But then they add the tragic reality of their own state: "But the word of punishment has come into effect upon the disbelievers." In other words, they confess that they were disbelievers, and because of their persistent, willful rejection, Allah’s decree of punishment became inevitably binding upon them. They sealed their own fate.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause at this scene. The disbelievers are not punished without warning. Allah, in His infinite mercy, sent messengers to every nation—people from among themselves, relatable and understandable. He gave them time, signs, and opportunities to return. Yet, when they persisted in denial, His justice took its course.
This verse is a profound reminder for us today. We have received the greatest of messages through the Qur’an and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). We have no excuse. The gates of repentance are still open in this life, but the gates of Hell will be flung open on that Day for those who reject the truth. Do not wait until you stand at those gates to admit what you already know. Come back to Allah now, with sincerity and humility, and let His mercy embrace you before the word of punishment becomes due. The choice is yours—today, not tomorrow.
