Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- بَشِّرِ (Bashshir): Literally means "give glad tidings," but here it is used ironically—announcing news that will change the expression on one's face, whether for good or ill. In this context, it means to inform them of a painful outcome.
- الْمُنَافِقِينَ (Al-Munafiqin): The hypocrites—those who outwardly profess faith in Islam while inwardly concealing disbelief and hostility toward it.
- عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا (Adhaban Aliman): A painful, excruciating torment.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Messenger of Allah, announce to the hypocrites—those who wear the mask of faith but harbor disbelief in their hearts—that awaiting them is a severe and agonizing punishment from Allah on the Day of Judgment. This "good news" is, in reality, a terrifying warning: their double-faced behavior, their deception of the believing community, and their inner rejection of the truth will not go unpunished. The verse uses the word "glad tidings" as a form of sharp irony, highlighting the bitter fate that contrasts so starkly with the false security they feel in this world. Their punishment is not merely physical but also spiritual—a deep humiliation and disgrace before Allah and His creation, for they thought they could deceive the All-Knowing, but nothing is hidden from Him.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse serves as a profound reminder of the importance of sincerity (ikhlas) in our relationship with Allah. The hypocrites are not just a historical group—they represent a timeless warning against the disease of duplicity. How often do we say one thing and believe another? How often do we perform acts of worship for show rather than for Allah's pleasure? The Quran exposes this inner corruption not to despair us, but to awaken us. Islam calls us to be people of integrity, whose hearts match their tongues, and whose actions reflect their inner faith. The path of the believer is one of honesty and transparency—with Allah, with ourselves, and with others. Let this verse inspire you to purify your intentions, to seek Allah's pleasure alone, and to embrace the beautiful simplicity of being true to your faith. For Allah, the Most Merciful, is always ready to forgive those who turn back to Him sincerely, but He is also Just, and His justice demands that hypocrisy be addressed. Choose sincerity, and you will find peace in this life and the next.
