Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Awliyaa (أَوْلِيَاء): Allies, protectors, or close friends whom one supports and relies upon.
- Min doon (مِن دُونِ): Instead of, or to the exclusion of.
- Sultaanan mubeena (سُلْطَانًا مُبِينًا): A clear, undeniable proof or argument against you.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O you who have truly believed in Allah and followed His Messenger! Do not take the disbelievers as your allies, protectors, or confidants, turning away from the believers and abandoning their loyalty and friendship. This is not merely a social choice—it is a matter of faith itself. When you align yourself with those who reject Allah's guidance, while neglecting your brothers and sisters in faith, you are sending a dangerous signal about the state of your heart.
Allah then poses a piercing question to awaken your conscience: "Do you wish to give Allah a clear proof against yourselves?" In other words, by befriending the enemies of faith, you are voluntarily handing over the evidence that will testify against you on the Day of Judgment—proof that your claim to faith was insincere, and that your actions contradicted your words. This is the very behavior of the hypocrites, who outwardly professed belief but inwardly sided with the opponents of truth.
Reflect deeply, dear believer: your loyalty is a mirror of your heart. If you love and support those who oppose Allah, what does that say about your own commitment? Allah does not need your allegiance—you are the one in need of His mercy and protection. By severing ties of loyalty with the disbelievers and embracing the believers, you safeguard your faith, purify your intentions, and build a community of mutual support that pleases your Lord.
This verse is a loving call from your Creator to protect you from spiritual ruin. He warns you now, in this life, so that you may not face His displeasure in the Hereafter. Heed His call, and you will find honor, security, and the sweetness of faith. For whoever allies himself with Allah and His believing servants, Allah will never abandon him—He is the Best of Protectors and the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.
