Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Mudhabdhabeen (مُذَبْذَبِينَ): Those who are tossed about, wavering, and oscillating between two states without settling on one.
  • Bayna dhalik (بَيْنَ ذَٰلِكَ): Between this and that — i.e., between faith and disbelief, or between the believers and the disbelievers.
  • Sabeel (سَبِيلًا): A path, way, or means of guidance and deliverance.

Tafsir (Explanation):

These hypocrites are described as being in a perpetual state of confusion and inner turmoil. They are neither fully with the believers — because their hearts are devoid of true faith — nor are they with the disbelievers, since they outwardly claim Islam and mix with the Muslim community. Their outward appearance aligns with the believers, but their inner reality is aligned with disbelief. Thus, they are suspended in a miserable middle ground, swaying like a pendulum with every changing circumstance. When they see Muslim strength, they lean toward the believers; when they see disbeliever influence, they lean the other way. This instability is the direct result of their corrupted intentions and lack of sincerity.

The verse then delivers a profound truth: "And whoever Allah leads astray, you will never find for him a way." This means that when a person turns away from the truth, rejects guidance, and persists in hypocrisy and deceit, Allah — in His perfect justice — leaves them to their own misguided choices. Once a heart becomes sealed due to persistent sin and arrogance, no external effort — no matter how sincere — can guide that person. The Prophet ﷺ himself, despite his immense mercy and eloquence, could not guide those whom Allah had willed to remain astray.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a powerful lesson for every soul: sincerity and clarity of heart are the keys to stability. The believer who submits wholly to Allah enjoys a firm footing in life — they are not tossed by every wind of opinion or circumstance. Their identity is clear: they belong to Allah and His Messenger, and they stand firmly on the truth. In contrast, those who try to please both sides, who live in ambiguity and compromise their faith for worldly gain, are left in a state of perpetual anxiety and confusion — a spiritual torment in itself.

The verse also serves as a loving warning: do not play games with your faith. Do not be double-faced or opportunistic. Allah knows what is in your heart, and He deals with you accordingly. If you sincerely seek Him, He will guide you and grant you clarity. But if you persist in insincerity, you risk being left in darkness — and once that happens, no one can rescue you.

So, dear reader, purify your intention, be honest with Allah, and choose your side firmly. The path of the believers is clear, bright, and leads to peace in this life and the next. Do not let the fleeting attractions of this world make you a wavering soul. Allah’s door of guidance is open to all who knock with sincerity — so knock today, and He will answer.

📜 Verse 141-145 — An-Nisa

Those who wait [and watch] you. Then if you gain a victory from Allah, they say, "Were we not with you?" But if the disbelievers have a success, they say [to them], "Did we not gain the advantage over you, but we protected you from the believers?" Allah will judge between [all of] you on the Day of Resurrection, and never will Allah give the disbelievers over the believers a way [to overcome them].
Indeed, the hypocrites [think to] deceive Allah, but He is deceiving them. And when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily, showing [themselves to] the people and not remembering Allah except a little,
Wavering between them, [belonging] neither to the believers nor to the disbelievers. And whoever Allah leaves astray - never will you find for him a way.
O you who have believed, do not take the disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Do you wish to give Allah against yourselves a clear case?
Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire - and never will you find for them a helper -
