Word Meanings:
- Al-Yatama (الْيَتَامَىٰ): Orphans — children who have lost their fathers and have not yet reached the age of maturity.
- Al-Khabeeth (الْخَبِيثَ): The impure, inferior, or unlawful — here referring to taking the good wealth of orphans and replacing it with one's own inferior wealth.
- At-Tayyib (الطَّيِّبِ): The pure, good, and lawful — one's own lawful wealth.
- Hoo ban (حُوبًا): A great sin, a heavy burden of wrongdoing.
Explanation of the Verse:
O guardians and trustees of orphans' wealth, Allah commands you to hand over the orphans' property to them in full when they reach the age of maturity and show sound judgment in managing their affairs. This is a sacred trust — the wealth belongs to them, not to you.
Do not exchange the impure for the pure — meaning, do not take the valuable, good possessions of the orphans and substitute them with your own worthless or inferior items, thinking you can cheat them out of their rights. This is a form of theft wrapped in deception.
And do not mix their wealth with your own with the intention of devouring it unjustly. Some guardians would blend the orphan's money with their own, then claim it as theirs, consuming what was never rightfully theirs. Allah forbids this utterly.
Indeed, whoever commits such an act has fallen into a grave and enormous sin — a sin that carries severe consequences in this life and the next. The Qur'an records that this verse was revealed regarding a man from the tribe of Ghatafan who withheld his orphaned nephew's substantial inheritance. When the nephew came of age and requested his due, the uncle refused — until Allah revealed this command, and the man, struck by its weight, immediately returned the wealth.
A Call to Reflection:
How beautiful is Islam's care for the vulnerable! The orphan — who has lost the protection and provision of a father — is placed under the direct guardianship of Allah Himself, who commands justice on their behalf. This verse reminds us that wealth is a trust from Allah, and those who betray that trust betray their Creator.
Let every guardian, every trustee, every person who holds the rights of others in their hands — whether of orphans, relatives, employees, or society — remember that Allah sees all. The wealth you withhold or corrupt will testify against you on the Day of Judgment.
But equally, know that caring for orphans is among the most beloved deeds to Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said: "I and the one who cares for an orphan will be together in Paradise like this" — and he held his index and middle fingers together. So be among those who protect, nurture, and honor orphans, and you will earn a place of honor in the Hereafter.
Let this verse transform your heart: if you hold anyone's right, return it with excellence. If you manage anyone's wealth, guard it as your own — or better. For the one who is just with orphans will find Allah's justice and mercy on the Day when nothing else avails.
