Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Mukhtālan (مُخْتَالًا): One who is arrogant, haughty, and looks down upon others with self-conceit.
- Fakhūr (فَخُورًا): One who constantly boasts and praises himself, flaunting his status or achievements before people out of pride.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this noble verse, Allah commands His servants to worship Him alone, surrendering fully to His will with sincere devotion, and to associate no partner with Him in His Lordship, Divinity, or worship. This is the foundation of faith — pure monotheism (Tawḥīd) — for Allah alone is the Creator, Sustainer, and Sovereign, and He alone deserves all acts of worship.
After establishing the greatest right — the right of Allah — the verse moves to the rights of creation, beginning with the parents. Allah commands excellence (iḥsān) toward them: kindness, respect, care, and fulfilling their needs, for they are the means of our existence in this world. This is followed by kindness to relatives (dhī al-qurbā), maintaining family ties and supporting them, then to orphans — those who have lost their protectors — and to the needy (al-masākīn) who struggle to meet their basic needs.
The verse then extends the circle of compassion to neighbors: the near neighbor (al-jār dhī al-qurbā), who is close both in kinship and proximity, and the distant neighbor (al-jār al-junub), who may be unrelated or farther away. Both deserve kindness, respect, and assistance. Then comes "the companion by your side" (al-ṣāḥib bil-janb) — which includes one's spouse, travel companions, and those with whom one shares daily life — all are entitled to gentle treatment and care. The wayfarer (ibn al-sabīl), the traveler stranded far from home, is also included, as is the slave or servant (mā malakat aymānukum), who must be treated with fairness and compassion.
This beautiful verse weaves a comprehensive social fabric of mercy, showing that true worship of Allah is inseparable from kindness to His creation. It teaches us that faith is not merely ritual but a living reality expressed in how we treat every human being around us — from our parents to the stranger in need.
Finally, Allah warns: "Indeed, Allah does not love those who are arrogant and boastful." Pride is the antithesis of true worship, for the worshipper recognizes his utter dependence on Allah, while the arrogant one magnifies himself and belittles others. Such a person is far from Allah's love and from the spirit of Islam, which calls for humility, gentleness, and service to others.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, this verse is a divine roadmap for a blessed life. It begins with the purest act — worshipping Allah alone — and then guides you to spread that light of goodness to every soul around you. Imagine the beauty of a society where parents are honored, relatives are cherished, orphans are sheltered, the poor are fed, neighbors are respected, companions are loved, travelers are hosted, and servants are treated with dignity! This is the society Islam builds — a civilization of mercy and compassion.
Let this verse inspire you today: check your heart for any trace of pride, for arrogance blocks the path to Allah's love. And reach out to those around you — your parents, your neighbor, the needy — with a kind word, a helping hand, or a sincere prayer. For in serving Allah's creation, you draw closer to your Creator, and you fulfill the very purpose of your existence: to worship Allah and to be a mercy to all.
