Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- خَاشِعِينَ (Khāshiʿīn): Humble, submissive, with downcast eyes and subdued demeanor.
- مِنَ الذُّلِّ (mina adh-dhull): Out of extreme humiliation and disgrace.
- مِن طَرْفٍ خَفِيٍّ (min ṭarfin khafiyy): A furtive, weak glance — looking secretly and timidly, like a prisoner glancing at the executioner, not daring to look directly.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Messenger, you will see those wrongdoers on the Day of Judgment as they are brought before the Fire — their heads lowered, their bodies trembling, utterly humiliated and broken. They do not dare to look at the Fire directly; instead, they steal fearful glances at it from the corner of their eyes, like a condemned man glancing at his executioner. Their pride, arrogance, and worldly power have vanished completely, replaced by sheer terror and disgrace.
At that very moment, the believers — safe in Paradise — will witness this scene and say: "Truly, the real losers are those who have lost themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection." They have lost themselves by being cast into eternal punishment, and they have lost their families — the spouses and loved ones who could have been with them in Paradise — because they rejected the truth and led them astray. What greater loss could there be than to lose one's own soul and one's loved ones forever?
Then comes the decisive declaration: "Indeed, the wrongdoers are in everlasting punishment." Not a temporary torment, not a passing affliction — but a permanent, unending agony. There is no escape, no relief, no end.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound scene. The believers in Paradise do not gloat over the suffering of others — rather, they recognize the magnitude of the loss and it fills them with gratitude for Allah's mercy. This verse is a powerful reminder that true success is not measured by wealth, status, or worldly achievements, but by the state of our hearts and our relationship with our Creator.
Every one of us has the opportunity right now — in this life — to avoid that humiliation. The door of repentance is open, and Allah's mercy is vast. He calls us to Him not out of need, but out of love for us. He wants us to succeed, to enter Paradise with our families, and to never experience that shameful glance at the Fire.
So let this verse be a wake-up call: Do not wait until that Day when glances are stolen in fear and regret fills the soul. Turn to Allah today, embrace His guidance, and secure your place among the successful — those who will look upon the Fire from a place of safety, not from within it. May Allah protect us all from being among the wrongdoers, and may He grant us the joy of being reunited with our loved ones in the eternal bliss of Paradise.
