Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- يُضْلِلِ (Yudlil): Causes to go astray or leads away from guidance.
- وَلِيّ (Waliyy): Protector, guardian, or one who takes charge of another's affairs.
- مَرَدّ (Maradd): A place of return or a way back (to the worldly life).
Explanation of the Verse:
When a person persists in injustice, oppression, and sin, Allah may abandon them to their own misguided choices as a consequence of their stubbornness and rebellion. For such a person, there is no protector, guide, or helper after Allah's decree of misguidance — no one who can rescue them from their state or lead them back to the path of righteousness. This is a profound warning: the ultimate source of guidance is Allah alone, and when He withholds it due to a person's deliberate wrongdoing, no other force in the universe can compensate for that loss.
Then the verse paints a vivid scene of the Day of Judgment: you, O Messenger, will see the wrongdoers — those who oppressed themselves through disbelief and disobedience — when they actually witness the punishment with their own eyes. At that terrifying moment, all their arrogance and denial crumbles, and they cry out in desperation: "Is there any way to go back to the worldly life?" They plead for another chance, hoping to return so they might repent, believe, and perform righteous deeds. But it will be too late — the opportunity has passed, and no road leads back.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse carries a powerful lesson for every soul: the door of repentance is open *now*, in this life, before the curtain falls. Allah, in His infinite mercy, does not turn away a sincere seeker. He says in another verse: "Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins" (Az-Zumar 39:53). So do not wait until you see the punishment to wish for a return — for that wish will not be granted then. Seize this precious moment of life, turn to your Lord with a humble heart, and let today be the day you choose guidance over misguidance, obedience over sin, and light over darkness. The path is open before you — walk it before it is sealed forever.
