Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Mahdan (مَهْدًا): A cradle, bed, or resting place — meaning the earth has been spread out and made smooth and stable for you, like a cradle prepared for a child.
- Subulan (سُبُلًا): Paths, roads, and routes — ways that lead you from one place to another.
- Tahtadūn (تَهْتَدُونَ): To be guided, to find your way, to reach your destinations and objectives.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse draws your attention to the boundless mercy and wisdom of Allah, the One who created you and prepared for you this vast earth. He made it a cradle — spread out, firm, and stable — so that you may settle upon it, build your lives, and move about with ease. It is not a turbulent or chaotic surface, but one that has been perfectly arranged for your comfort and survival.
Moreover, Allah placed within this earth clear paths and roads — through mountains, valleys, plains, and deserts — so that you may travel from one land to another, seek your provision, engage in trade, visit your loved ones, and fulfill your needs. These pathways are not random; they are part of a divine design that makes life on earth possible and convenient.
The verse concludes with the purpose of all this: "so that you may be guided" — guided not only to your physical destinations but, more profoundly, to reflect upon the Creator who arranged all of this for you. When you see how the earth is spread beneath your feet and how roads open up before you, your heart should turn to the One who made it all possible, and you should be guided to recognize His greatness, His mercy, and His right to be worshipped alone.
A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:
Dear reader, pause for a moment and think: Who flattened the mountains and carved the valleys? Who made the earth firm so that it does not shake beneath you? Who placed the stars to guide you at night and the landmarks to direct you by day? It is Allah — the Most Merciful, the Most Wise. He did not create all of this in vain, nor did He leave you without guidance. Just as He guided you to physical destinations through these paths, He has also sent you the ultimate guidance — the Qur'an and the Sunnah — to lead you to the greatest destination of all: His pleasure and eternal Paradise.
So, let every step you take on these earthly roads remind you of the One who paved them for you. Let every journey you make inspire gratitude in your heart. And let your ultimate journey — the one to your Lord — be your greatest concern. For He who prepared the earth for your temporary stay has also prepared Paradise for those who believe and do righteous deeds. Will you not then be among the guided?
