And who sends down rain from the sky in measured amounts, and We revive thereby a dead land - thus will you be brought forth -

Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • بِقَدَرٍ (bi-qadar): In precise, measured amounts — neither excessive nor deficient, perfectly suited to the needs of creation.
  • فَأَنشَرْنَا (fa-ansharnā): We revived and brought to life; the word carries the sense of spreading and unfolding life, like a plant unfolding from the earth.
  • بَلْدَةً مَّيْتًا (baldatan maytan): A dead, barren land — dry, lifeless, with no vegetation or sign of vitality.

The Interpretation:

This verse draws our attention to one of the most profound signs of Allah’s power and mercy: the sending down of rain from the sky. He, the Exalted, sends water in perfect measure — not as a devastating flood that would destroy, nor so scarce that it would fail to meet the needs of His creatures. Rather, it comes down in just the right amount to sustain life for you, your livestock, and your crops.

Then Allah says: "We revived with it a dead land." Imagine a barren, arid expanse — cracked earth, no plant, no sign of life. Then the rain falls, and suddenly that same land bursts forth with greenery, vegetation, and nourishment. This is not the work of chance; it is the deliberate act of the Creator, who brings life out of death before your very eyes.

The verse concludes with a powerful connection: "Thus shall you be brought forth." Just as you witness the revival of dead earth with water, so too will you be brought forth from your graves on the Day of Resurrection. The One who has power to revive a lifeless land has even greater power to revive the dead bodies of His servants. The same divine power that gives life to the earth will give life to you.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this miracle that repeats itself before you every time rain falls. The cycle of death and revival in nature is not a random event — it is a living lesson, a daily reminder of your own journey. The Lord who cares for a barren land, sending it exactly what it needs, is the same Lord who knows your needs, hears your prayers, and will call you forth from your grave.

This verse invites you to see the hand of Allah in the ordinary — in the rain that waters the earth, in the seed that splits open, in the green shoot that emerges. If you can trust Him with the earth, why not trust Him with your own resurrection? If you can see His mercy in reviving a dead land, then know that His mercy is even greater when He brings you back to life for an eternal meeting with Him.

Let this verse strengthen your certainty, soften your heart, and fill you with hope. The same Allah who sends rain in due measure will, in His perfect wisdom and justice, bring you forth from your grave. So live your life with this certainty in your heart, and let it guide you to gratitude, obedience, and love for the One who created you and will bring you back to life.

📜 Verse 9-13 — Az-Zukhruf

And if you should ask them, "Who has created the heavens and the earth?" they would surely say, "They were created by the Exalted in Might, the Knowing."
[The one] who has made for you the earth a bed and made for you upon it roads that you might be guided
And who sends down rain from the sky in measured amounts, and We revive thereby a dead land - thus will you be brought forth -
And who created the species, all of them, and has made for you of ships and animals those which you mount.
That you may settle yourselves upon their backs and then remember the favor of your Lord when you have settled upon them and say. "Exalted is He who has subjected this to us, and we could not have [otherwise] subdued it.
