Surah Az-Zukhruf — Verse 23

• مُتْرَفُوهَا (mutrafūhā): The affluent, luxurious ones among them — the chiefs and leaders who were spoiled by wealth and comfort.
• أُمَّةٍ (ummatin): A religion, a way, or a path (here referring to the faith and practices of their forefathers).

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah consoles His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and teaches him a profound lesson about human nature. Just as the disbelievers of Makkah rejected your message and excused themselves by saying, "We follow what our fathers were upon," so too was the case with every community before them. Whenever Allah sent a warner to a town — a prophet or messenger calling people to the worship of Allah alone — the response of the wealthy, privileged elite was always the same. They would arrogantly declare: "We have found our forefathers upon a certain religion, and we are but followers of their footsteps."

This is a universal pattern of stubbornness. The "mutrafūn" — those who have been given abundance and luxury — are often the most resistant to truth, because they feel they have everything to lose. Their comfort blinds them to the reality of the message, and their pride prevents them from humbling themselves before their Creator. Instead of examining the truth with open minds and pure hearts, they hide behind the hollow excuse of ancestral tradition.

Notice the irony: they claim to follow their fathers, yet their fathers were themselves misguided. Blind imitation is not a valid proof for truth. The prophets came with clear signs, miracles, and undeniable evidence, yet these elites refused to look beyond their inherited customs. They preferred the comfort of conformity over the challenge of conviction.

This verse serves as a powerful reminder for all of us. How often do we cling to traditions, habits, or beliefs simply because "that's what we grew up with"? The Quran challenges us to think critically and seek the truth, even if it means breaking away from what is familiar. Our ultimate loyalty must be to Allah and His revelation, not to the customs of our ancestors — especially when those customs contradict divine guidance.

The Prophet ﷺ is being reassured here: "You are not alone in facing this rejection. Every prophet before you faced the same opposition from the privileged classes." This is a source of strength and patience for every believer who strives to spread goodness — the path of truth has always been difficult, but it is the only path that leads to eternal success.

Dear reader, this verse invites you to reflect: Are you a follower of truth, or merely a follower of tradition? The companions of the Prophet ﷺ were people who chose truth over blind conformity, even when it meant opposing their own families and clans. They examined the message, recognized its beauty, and embraced it wholeheartedly. This is the spirit of Islam — a religion that calls you to use your intellect, purify your heart, and submit to the One who created you. Do not let the weight of inherited habits hold you back from the light of guidance. The truth is clear, and it is never too late to embrace it with sincerity and courage.
