Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ummah (أُمَّةٍ): Here it means a religion, way, or path that people follow.
- Āthārihim (آثَارِهِم): Their footsteps or traces, meaning the way and practices they left behind.
- Muhtadūn (مُّهْتَدُونَ): Guided ones, those who claim to be on the right path.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse exposes the hollow argument of those who rejected the truth. When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) called his people to worship Allah alone and abandon their idols, they did not respond with evidence or sound reasoning. Instead, they clung to a feeble excuse: "We found our forefathers following a certain religion, and we are following in their footsteps, so we are guided."
This was nothing more than blind imitation. They had no proof that their ancestors were right, nor did they verify whether that path led to salvation or destruction. They simply assumed that because their fathers and grandfathers practiced something, it must be correct. This is a dangerous logic — one that has been used by every nation that rejected its prophets. The Qur'an repeatedly points out that this was the response of previous disbelievers as well: they followed their ancestors without questioning, even when those ancestors were clearly astray.
Notice how they described themselves as "guided" merely because they followed their forefathers. They made their ancestors the ultimate authority, rather than the revelation sent by Allah. This is a reversal of the natural order — guidance comes from Allah, not from inherited customs. A person who follows falsehood simply because it is old does not become guided; rather, they become a prisoner of tradition.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless lesson for all of us. How often do we accept things in our lives — beliefs, practices, or even lifestyles — simply because "that is what our parents and grandparents did"? We must ask ourselves: Did they follow the truth? Did they base their actions on the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him)? If yes, then following them is praiseworthy. But if not, then we must have the courage to break free from blind imitation and seek the truth for ourselves.
Allah, in His infinite mercy, did not leave us without guidance. He sent the Qur'an as a clear light and the Prophet as a living example. The path of Islam is not a blind following of ancestors — it is a path of knowledge, evidence, and sincere devotion to the Creator. When you embrace Islam with understanding, you are not merely imitating others; you are responding to the call of your Lord, who knows what is best for you.
So let us be among those who think, who question, and who seek the truth with sincerity. Let us not be satisfied with the excuse of "we found our fathers doing this." Instead, let us be like the believers who say: "We hear and we obey" — with hearts full of love for Allah and minds open to His guidance. That is the path to true success, both in this life and the Hereafter.
