Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah reminds us of His immense favors upon the Children of Israel, as a lesson in gratitude and as a warning against arrogance and transgression. He says: "And indeed We gave the Children of Israel the Scripture, judgment, and prophethood, and We provided them with good things, and We favored them over the worlds."
Allah bestowed upon them four great blessings: First, the Scripture — the Torah, a comprehensive divine law guiding them to truth and righteousness. Second, judgment — the wisdom and understanding to apply that law, to resolve disputes, and to govern with justice, embodied in their prophets and scholars. Third, prophethood — the greatest honor, as most of the prophets after Ibrahim (Abraham), peace be upon him, came from their lineage, including Musa, Harun, Dawud, Sulayman, and culminating in 'Isa (Jesus), peace be upon them all. Fourth, provision of good things — Allah granted them pure and wholesome sustenance, such as mann (a sweet heavenly food) and salwa (quail), as well as abundant fruits and blessings in the land.
And He favored them over the peoples of their time — not because of their own merit, but as a divine test and a manifestation of His mercy. This favor was meant to be a means of gratitude and obedience, not a license for pride or rebellion.
A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:
Dear reader, ponder this: Allah gave the Children of Israel all these blessings, yet when they received them, many turned away, broke their covenants, and even rejected the final messengers. Their story is a mirror for us — a reminder that divine favors are not permanent guarantees; they are trusts that must be preserved through faith, gratitude, and obedience.
How blessed are we, as the Ummah of Muhammad (peace be upon him), to have received the greatest Scripture — the Qur'an — which supersedes all previous books, and the final and most complete prophethood! Yet how often do we neglect its recitation, its understanding, and its application in our daily lives?
Let this verse awaken in your heart a profound sense of gratitude to Allah for the blessings of Islam and the Qur'an. Let it inspire you to cherish every blessing — your health, your wealth, your knowledge, and above all, your faith — and to use them in ways that please your Lord. For the one who is grateful receives more, as Allah promises: "If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]" (Ibrahim: 7).
And let the fate of the Children of Israel serve as a warning: when blessings are met with arrogance and disobedience, they can be withdrawn, and honor can turn into humiliation. So hold fast to the rope of Allah, and be among those who hear the call of truth and respond with sincerity and devotion.
