Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Man ʿamila ṣāliḥan — Whoever performs righteous deeds, meaning actions that are in accordance with Allah’s commands and the teachings of His Messenger (peace be upon him).
  • Falinafsihi — For his own soul; the benefit of that good deed returns to the doer himself.
  • Wa man asāʾa — And whoever does evil, meaning commits sins and transgressions against Allah’s limits.
  • Faʿalayhā — Against his own soul; the harm and consequence of that evil falls upon him alone.
  • Thumma ilā rabbikum turjaʿūn — Then to your Lord you will be returned; this refers to the resurrection after death, when all people will be brought back to their Creator for judgment.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse establishes a fundamental principle of justice and personal responsibility in Islam. Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) declares that whoever performs righteous deeds — whether in worship, in dealings with others, or in their character — the reward of those deeds is for their own benefit. Allah is completely free of need for our actions; He does not gain anything from our obedience, nor does He lose anything from our disobedience. Rather, it is we who stand to gain or lose.

Similarly, whoever commits evil and wrongdoing, the consequences of that evil fall upon themselves. They are the ones who will bear the burden of their sins, and Allah is not harmed in the least by their disobedience. This is a manifestation of Allah’s perfect justice — He does not wrong anyone, and every soul reaps what it sows.

Then comes the crucial reminder: "Then to your Lord you will all be returned." This is the ultimate destination that gives meaning to all our actions. After this worldly life ends, every single person — believer and disbeliever, righteous and wicked — will be brought back to their Lord. On that Day, Allah will judge with absolute fairness: the one who did good will be rewarded with Paradise and eternal bliss, and the one who did evil will face the consequences of their actions.

This verse carries a profound message of hope and accountability. It tells us that our efforts are never wasted — every good deed, no matter how small, is recorded and will be rewarded. At the same time, it warns us that we cannot escape the consequences of our sins. The return to Allah is inevitable, and that is when the true outcome of our lives will be revealed.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, ponder this beautiful truth: your good deeds are not for Allah’s benefit — He is Self-Sufficient, the Most Rich, free of all needs. Rather, they are an investment in your own eternal future. Every prayer you offer, every honest transaction you make, every kind word you speak, every charity you give — all of it is being stored for you as treasure in the Hereafter.

And your sins? They are not harming Allah either. They only harm you. Like a person who drinks poison, the one who sins is only destroying himself while thinking he is free.

So seize this moment before the return. The door of repentance is open, and Allah’s mercy is vast. Turn to Him now, do good for your own soul, and save yourself from the consequences of evil. For the journey back to your Lord is certain — and what you send ahead of you today will be exactly what you meet tomorrow. May Allah guide us all to what pleases Him and grant us success in this life and the next.

📜 Verse 13-17 — Al-Jathiyah

And He has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth - all from Him. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.
Say, [O Muhammad], to those who have believed that they [should] forgive those who expect not the days of Allah so that He may recompense a people for what they used to earn.
Whoever does a good deed - it is for himself; and whoever does evil - it is against the self. Then to your Lord you will be returned.
And We did certainly give the Children of Israel the Scripture and judgement and prophethood, and We provided them with good things and preferred them over the worlds.
And We gave them clear proofs of the matter [of religion]. And they did not differ except after knowledge had come to them - out of jealous animosity between themselves. Indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ.
