Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Bid‘an (بِدْعًا): An unprecedented thing or a novelty; here it means the first of a kind or an innovation with no prior example.
- Nadheerun Mubeen (نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ): A clear warner who plainly and openly warns people of consequences.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Prophet, Allah instructs you to address the disbelievers who reject your message and question your prophethood. Say to them: "I am not an unprecedented messenger, nor am I the first of my kind. Many messengers were sent before me — Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, and ‘Isa, peace be upon them all — so my coming is not a strange or novel affair that you should be astonished by. Rather, it is the established way of Allah to send messengers to guide humanity."
Then, you are to declare your complete submission to Allah’s will and your ignorance of the unseen: "I do not know what will be done with me or with you in this worldly life." This is a profound lesson in humility — even the Prophet, the most beloved of creation to Allah, does not possess knowledge of the future or of Allah’s decrees regarding worldly affairs. This knowledge belongs exclusively to Allah, the All-Knowing, the All-Wise. The Prophet’s role is not to predict or control outcomes, but to convey the truth with sincerity.
You then affirm your absolute obedience: "I follow nothing except what is revealed to me." This means that every word you speak, every command you give, and every action you take is in complete accordance with the divine revelation — the Qur’an. You do not speak from personal desire or invent anything from yourself. This is the highest standard of trustworthiness and integrity: a messenger who is a pure vessel for Allah’s guidance, with no personal agenda.
Finally, you declare your true role: "I am only a clear warner." Your mission is to warn humanity of the consequences of disbelief and sin, and to call them to the path of righteousness — with clarity, sincerity, and mercy. You are not a tyrant forcing people, nor a soothsayer claiming hidden knowledge. You are a compassionate guide, illuminating the way to salvation.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer. It teaches us humility — to recognize that we do not control outcomes, but only our efforts and intentions. It teaches us reliance on Allah’s revelation as the sole source of guidance in our lives. And it teaches us the beauty of Islam: a religion built on clear truth, sincere warning, and boundless mercy. When we follow the Qur’an and the Sunnah, we are walking the very path the Prophet himself walked — a path of submission, trust, and unwavering devotion to Allah. Let this verse inspire you to hold fast to the revelation, to be humble in your knowledge, and to share the message of Islam with clarity and love, just as the Prophet did. For indeed, the one who follows revelation is never lost, and the one who warns with sincerity is never blamed for the choices of others.
