Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ar-aytum (أَرَأَيْتُمْ): "Tell me" or "Inform me" – a rhetorical device used to provoke thought and self-reflection.
  • Shahida shāhidun (وَشَهِدَ شَاهِدٌ): "A witness testified" – referring to a person from the Children of Israel who bore witness to the truth of the Qur'an based on what was in the Torah.
  • ʿAlā mithlihi (عَلَىٰ مِثْلِهِ): "Upon the like of it" – meaning the witness testified to the truth of the Qur'an because it matched what was revealed in the Torah regarding the coming of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the message of monotheism.
  • Istawkabtum (وَاسْتَكْبَرْتُمْ): "And you were arrogant" – meaning you refused to accept the truth out of pride and haughtiness.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O Prophet, say to those who reject the message: "Tell me – if this Qur'an is truly from Allah, and you have denied it, while a knowledgeable witness from the Children of Israel – such as Abdullah ibn Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) – testifies to its truth because he finds it confirmed in the Torah that was revealed before it, and he believes in it sincerely, yet you turn away in arrogance and refuse to accept it – then who is more unjust than you?"

This verse presents a powerful argument to the disbelievers of Makkah. The witness from the People of the Book, who had been awaiting the final Messenger, recognized the truth immediately upon hearing the Qur'an and embraced Islam wholeheartedly. His testimony was not blind; it was based on the clear signs and descriptions found in their own scriptures. Despite this, the Quraysh, who had no such prior knowledge, rejected the message out of pride and tribal stubbornness.

The verse concludes with a profound divine principle: "Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people." This means that those who persist in injustice – and what greater injustice is there than denying the truth after it has become clear, and rejecting the Messenger after his authenticity has been established – will not be granted the success of guidance. Their arrogance becomes a barrier between them and the light of faith.

Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every seeker of truth. It highlights the beauty of sincere testimony – how an honest heart, regardless of its background, recognizes the light of truth when it shines. The witness from the Children of Israel did not hesitate; he did not let pride or social pressure hold him back. He submitted to Allah immediately, and Allah honored him with faith.

For us today, this verse invites us to examine our own hearts: Are we open to the truth wherever it comes from? Do we allow arrogance or habit to blind us from what is clearly right? The Qur'an is not merely a book to be recited – it is a living proof, a mercy, and a guide. When the truth is clear, the only thing standing between a person and salvation is their own ego.

Let us be among those who lower their pride, submit to their Lord, and testify to the truth with courage and sincerity. For Allah's promise is certain: He guides those who seek Him with a pure heart, and He leaves the arrogant to wander in their own darkness. The door of repentance and guidance is always open – so let us hasten to it before it is too late.

📜 Verse 8-12 — Al-Ahqaf

Or do they say, "He has invented it?" Say, "If I have invented it, you will not possess for me [the power of protection] from Allah at all. He is most knowing of that in which you are involved. Sufficient is He as Witness between me and you, and He is the Forgiving the Merciful."
Say, "I am not something original among the messengers, nor do I know what will be done with me or with you. I only follow that which is revealed to me, and I am not but a clear warner."
Say, "Have you considered: if the Qur'an was from Allah, and you disbelieved in it while a witness from the Children of Israel has testified to something similar and believed while you were arrogant...?" Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
And those who disbelieve say of those who believe, "If it had [truly] been good, they would not have preceded us to it." And when they are not guided by it, they will say, "This is an ancient falsehood."
And before it was the scripture of Moses to lead and as a mercy. And this is a confirming Book in an Arabic tongue to warn those who have wronged and as good tidings to the doers of good.
