Key Words and Phrases:
- "Lawlā" (لَوْلَا): "Why not?" or "If only" – a phrase expressing eagerness and desire for something to happen.
- "Sūrah Muḥkamah" (سُورَةٌ مُحْكَمَةٌ): A chapter of the Qur'an that is definitive and clear in its rulings, with verses that are firm and not abrogated.
- "Those in whose hearts is a disease" (الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ): A reference to the hypocrites (munāfiqūn) whose faith is weak and whose hearts are filled with doubt and skepticism.
- "Al-Maghshiyyi 'alayhi min al-mawt" (الْمَغْشِيِّ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْمَوْتِ): The look of a person who is overwhelmed by the throes of death – a state of utter terror, fainting, and near-unconsciousness from sheer fear.
Explanation of the Verse:
The believers, with sincere hearts and a deep longing to defend the cause of Allah, would eagerly say: "Why is a sūrah not revealed to us? Why does Allah not command us to fight in His path?" They were not afraid of hardship or sacrifice; rather, they yearned for the honor of standing firm in the way of Allah.
Yet, when a decisive sūrah was revealed, one that was clear and definitive in its rulings, and when it mentioned the obligation of fighting (jihād) against the enemies of truth, the scene changed dramatically. You would see those whose hearts are afflicted with the disease of hypocrisy and doubt – they would stare at you, O Prophet, with a look of sheer terror and panic, like a person who is on the verge of death, overwhelmed by fear and dread. Their faces would pale, their eyes would freeze, and their limbs would tremble, for they dreaded the call to sacrifice and the test of their true faith.
To such people, the Qur'an issues a stern warning: "Woe to them!" – meaning that destruction and punishment are near at hand for them because of their cowardice and their refusal to embrace the truth. They are threatened with a painful consequence for their hypocrisy and their aversion to the path of Allah.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse paints a vivid picture of two very different hearts in the face of divine command. The believers, when they hear the call to jihād, feel their hearts swell with courage and their spirits rise with determination, for they know that Allah's promise is true and that Paradise lies beneath the shade of swords. They see the battlefield not as a place of death, but as a gateway to eternal life.
The hypocrites, on the other hand, are exposed for what they truly are. Their outward claims of faith melt away when tested, and their true nature is revealed in moments of trial. Their fear of death and their attachment to this fleeting world blind them to the greater reward that awaits those who sacrifice for Allah's sake.
Dear reader, let this verse be a mirror for your own heart. Ask yourself: When the call to truth and sacrifice comes, which of these two reactions do I find within myself? Do I eagerly await the commands of Allah, or do I shy away when they demand effort and courage? The Qur'an is not merely a book to be recited; it is a guide to be lived. And the path it calls us to – the path of faith, patience, and sacrifice – is the only path that leads to true success in this life and the Hereafter.
Let us not be like those who claim faith with their tongues but whose hearts tremble at the mention of struggle. Instead, let us be among those who say, "We hear and we obey," and who rush to the commands of Allah with love, trust, and unwavering certainty. For indeed, Allah has promised His faithful servants a great reward, and His help is ever near to those who strive in His cause.
