Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Fa'lam" (فَاعْلَمْ): Know with certainty and conviction, not merely with doubt or guesswork.
- "Lā ilāha illā Allāh" (لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ): There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone.
- "Istagfir" (وَاسْتَغْفِرْ): Seek forgiveness and pardon from Allah.
- "Mutaqallabakum" (مُتَقَلَّبَكُمْ): Your movements, activities, and comings and goings during the day.
- "Mathwākum" (مَثْوَاكُمْ): Your resting place, whether in sleep at night or your final abode in the Hereafter.
The Tafsir (Explanation):
O Prophet, establish your heart firmly upon the greatest truth of all: that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah alone — no partner, no rival, no equal. Let this knowledge penetrate your soul and guide every action you take. Then, turn to your Lord in sincere repentance, seeking His forgiveness for your own shortcomings, and extend that same heartfelt supplication to all believing men and believing women, asking Allah to pardon their sins and shower them with His mercy. This act of seeking forgiveness is not only a personal need but also a beautiful example for the entire Muslim community to follow — that no one is free from the need for Allah's grace, and that the believers are bound together in mutual care and prayer for one another.
And know, O servants of Allah, that nothing escapes His knowledge. He is fully aware of your every movement — where you go, what you do, and how you spend your days in wakefulness and activity. He also knows your place of rest — where you sleep at night and, ultimately, your final destination in the Hereafter, whether it be the eternal bliss of Paradise or the punishment of the Fire. This awareness should fill your heart with both hope and reverence: hope, because Allah's knowledge means He sees your sincere efforts and will reward them; reverence, because nothing you do is hidden from Him, so guard your actions and intentions accordingly.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a profound gift from Allah to His believing servants. It teaches us that the path to peace begins with knowing Allah — the One who created us, sustains us, and loves us more than a mother loves her child. When you truly know that there is no god but Allah, your heart finds rest, your worries find resolution, and your life finds purpose. And when you seek forgiveness — for yourself and for your fellow believers — you open the doors of mercy not only for yourself but for the entire community of faith. Imagine the beauty of a believer who, in the quiet of the night, raises their hands and prays for the forgiveness of their brothers and sisters in Islam! This is the unity and love that Islam plants in the heart. Let this verse inspire you to strengthen your knowledge of Allah, to repent sincerely, and to be a source of mercy and prayer for others. For Allah, who knows your every move and your final resting place, is always ready to forgive, to guide, and to welcome you into His eternal Paradise.
