📖 English Meaning
And [that] He may punish the hypocrite men and hypocrite women, and the polytheist men and polytheist women - those who assume about Allah an assumption of evil nature. Upon them is a misfortune of evil nature; and Allah has become angry with them and has cursed them and prepared for them Hell, and evil it is as a destination.

Word Meanings:

  • الظَّانِّينَ بِاللَّهِ ظَنَّ السَّوْءِ – Those who hold evil thoughts and false assumptions about Allah, believing that He will not support His religion or grant victory to His Messenger and the believers.
The circle of evil and misfortune; i.e., calamity and punishment will revolve around them and strike them.
He removed them from His mercy and distanced them from all that is good.
A final destination and place of return.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah Almighty declares that He will punish the hypocrites—both men and women—and the polytheists—both men and women—who harbored evil thoughts about Allah. They assumed that Allah would never support His Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the believers, and that Islam would not prevail or spread. They doubted Allah’s promise of victory and thought that His religion would perish.

Allah then states that the circle of evil and misfortune will turn back upon them—meaning that the very calamity they wished for the believers will befall them instead. They will be struck by humiliation and defeat in this world, and in the Hereafter, Allah’s wrath will descend upon them. He has cursed them, casting them far from His mercy, and has prepared for them Hellfire—an utterly terrible destination and a most evil place to end up.

This verse serves as a powerful reminder that no one can outsmart Allah or escape His justice. Those who plot against the truth and hold ill thoughts about their Lord will inevitably face the consequences of their arrogance and disbelief.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: never doubt Allah’s promise, no matter how difficult circumstances may appear. The hypocrites and polytheists of that era looked at the small number of Muslims and the immense opposition they faced, and they concluded that Islam was doomed. Yet Allah turned the tables completely—granting victory to His Prophet and establishing His religion upon the earth.

For us today, this is a call to strengthen our trust in Allah (tawakkul). When you see the forces of falsehood gathering, when the path of truth seems steep and lonely, remember that Allah’s promise is true and His help is near. The same Allah who supported His Prophet in the desert of Arabia is with you today. Hold only good thoughts about your Lord, for He is capable of turning the darkest night into the brightest dawn. And beware of ever falling into the trap of despair or ill assumptions about Allah—for that path leads only to loss, both in this world and the next.

📜 Verse 4-8 — Al-Fath

It is He who sent down tranquillity into the hearts of the believers that they would increase in faith along with their [present] faith. And to Allah belong the soldiers of the heavens and the earth, and ever is Allah Knowing and Wise.
[And] that He may admit the believing men and the believing women to gardens beneath which rivers flow to abide therein eternally and remove from them their misdeeds - and ever is that, in the sight of Allah, a great attainment -
And [that] He may punish the hypocrite men and hypocrite women, and the polytheist men and polytheist women - those who assume about Allah an assumption of evil nature. Upon them is a misfortune of evil nature; and Allah has become angry with them and has cursed them and prepared for them Hell, and evil it is as a destination.
And to Allah belong the soldiers of the heavens and the earth. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise.
Indeed, We have sent you as a witness and a bringer of good tidings and a warner
