Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Mulukan" (مُلُوكًا): Kings or rulers—those who have authority over their own affairs, as opposed to being enslaved or subjugated.
  • "Al-'Alamin" (الْعَالَمِينَ): The peoples/nations of their time—i.e., all other communities existing contemporaneously with them.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O Prophet Muhammad, remind your people of the story when Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) addressed his people, the Children of Israel, saying: "O my people, remember the favor of Allah upon you." He called them to recall with their hearts and tongues the immense blessings their Lord had bestowed upon them—not to boast, but to awaken gratitude and humility within them.

Among those blessings, Musa reminded them that Allah had placed among them prophets—messengers and guides who called them to the truth and led them out of darkness into light. No other nation in their time had received such a continuous chain of divinely chosen teachers. Additionally, Allah made them kings—masters of their own destiny after they had been humiliated and enslaved under the tyranny of Pharaoh and his regime. They were given freedom, dignity, and authority over their own affairs.

Furthermore, Allah granted them favors never given to any other nation of their era: the manna and quails from the heavens, the shade of clouds in the scorching desert, the splitting of the sea for their escape, and countless other miracles. These were signs of Allah's special care and love for them.

Yet, despite all this, their ancestors rebelled against Musa and disobeyed his commands. This story serves as a profound lesson and a source of comfort for the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): just as the Children of Israel opposed their prophet despite such favors, so too did some of his own people oppose him—yet the truth remains victorious, and Allah's promise is sure.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect: how often do we forget the countless blessings Allah has poured upon us? We wake up in safety, eat from His provision, breathe His air, and walk upon His earth—yet our hearts rarely engage in true gratitude. The Qur'an invites us to "remember" not as a mere mental exercise, but as a transformative act that fills the heart with love for the Giver and motivates us to obey Him.

If the Children of Israel were blessed with prophets among them, we—the Ummah of Muhammad (peace be upon him)—have been blessed with the final and greatest revelation, the Qur'an, which remains preserved and accessible to every seeker of truth. We have been made "kings" in the sense that we are free from the servitude of false gods and human tyrants; our only Master is Allah alone. This is the greatest honor and liberation.

So let us not be like those who turned away from their prophet despite every favor. Instead, let us be among those who recognize Allah's blessings, speak of them with gratitude, and use them to draw nearer to Him. For Allah says: "If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]" (Ibrahim 14:7). The door of increase is open—will you knock?

📜 Verse 18-22 — Al-Maidah

But the Jews and the Christians say, "We are the children of Allah and His beloved." Say, "Then why does He punish you for your sins?" Rather, you are human beings from among those He has created. He forgives whom He wills, and He punishes whom He wills. And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, and to Him is the [final] destination.
O People of the Scripture, there has come to you Our Messenger to make clear to you [the religion] after a period [of suspension] of messengers, lest you say, "There came not to us any bringer of good tidings or a warner." But there has come to you a bringer of good tidings and a warner. And Allah is over all things competent.
And [mention, O Muhammad], when Moses said to his people, "O my people, remember the favor of Allah upon you when He appointed among you prophets and made you possessors and gave you that which He had not given anyone among the worlds.
O my people, enter the Holy Land which Allah has assigned to you and do not turn back [from fighting in Allah 's cause] and [thus] become losers."
They said, "O Moses, indeed within it is a people of tyrannical strength, and indeed, we will never enter it until they leave it; but if they leave it, then we will enter."
