Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Aykah (الأيكة): The thick, tangled trees or a dense wooded area. It refers to the people of Prophet Shu'ayb (peace be upon him), who lived near a lush, green forest in Madyan.
- Tubba' (تُبَّع): A title given to the kings of Himyar in Yemen, similar to "Pharaoh" for Egypt or "Caesar" for Rome. The specific Tubba' mentioned here is the one whose people rejected their prophet.
- Wa'eed (وعيد): The divine threat or promise of punishment for those who persist in disbelief and wrongdoing.
Explanation of the Verse:
After mentioning the nations of Nuh, the people of Ar-Rass, Thamud, 'Ad, Pharaoh, the brethren of Lut, and the dwellers of the Wood (Madyan), Allah continues in this verse: "And the companions of the Wood and the people of Tubba' — each denied the messengers, so My threat was fulfilled."
The "companions of the Wood" are the people of Prophet Shu'ayb (peace be upon him), who were blessed with abundant greenery and water, yet they cheated in trade, worshipped false gods, and rejected the call to monotheism. The "people of Tubba'" were the inhabitants of Yemen under the rule of a powerful Himyarite king. Despite receiving clear signs and warnings through their prophets, they too persisted in arrogance and disbelief.
Allah then makes a profound statement: "Each denied the messengers." This is a crucial point — rejecting one messenger is, in essence, rejecting all of them, because they all brought the same fundamental message: *La ilaha illa Allah* (there is no god but Allah). The people of Tubba' are specifically mentioned here, and it is noteworthy that the Qur'an praises Tubba' himself (as mentioned in Surah Ad-Dukhan: 37) because he believed, while condemning his people for their rejection.
The verse concludes: "So My threat was fulfilled." This means that the punishment which Allah had warned them about — whether it was the earthquake for Shu'ayb's people, the devastating flood for Tubba's nation, or the various forms of destruction that befell the others — inevitably descended upon them. There was no escape, no delay, and no one could avert it once Allah's decree was issued.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, ponder over this verse with an open heart. These nations were not destroyed because they lacked resources, power, or civilization. The people of Tubba' had magnificent buildings and advanced irrigation systems; the companions of the Wood lived amidst beautiful gardens and flowing streams. Yet, all of this could not protect them when they rejected the truth.
The lesson is timeless: no amount of worldly success, technological advancement, or material comfort can shield a person or a society from the consequences of turning away from their Creator. The same fate awaits those who follow in their footsteps, regardless of the era or the place.
But here is the beautiful news: Allah's mercy is greater than His wrath. He sent messengers to every nation to guide them before any punishment came. He gives us time to repent, to return to Him, and to correct our course. The door of repentance remains open until the moment of death or the arrival of the Hour.
So, let this verse be a wake-up call. Examine your life: Are you following the messengers' call to worship Allah alone? Are you treating others with fairness and justice, as Shu'ayb taught his people? Are you grateful for the blessings Allah has given you, rather than using them to rebel against Him?
The Qur'an is not just a book of stories — it is a living guide. These historical accounts are mirrors for us to see ourselves. If you find goodness in your heart, thank Allah and strive to increase it. If you find negligence, hasten to repent before the threat becomes reality for you.
May Allah protect us from the fate of those who rejected His messengers, and may He include us among those who hear the call of truth and respond to it with sincerity and action. Ameen.
