Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • أَفَعَيِينَا (Afauyina): Did We become weary or incapable? It means: Did We fail or become exhausted?
  • بِالْخَلْقِ الْأَوَّلِ (bil-khalq al-awwal): The first creation — the initial bringing of beings into existence from nothing.
  • لَبْسٍ (labs): Confusion, doubt, or ambiguity that clouds the mind.
  • خَلْقٍ جَدِيدٍ (khalq jadeed): A new creation — the resurrection and re-creation of humans after death.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah, the Most High, addresses the deniers of the Resurrection with a powerful rhetorical question that strikes at the very heart of their doubt: *"Did We fail in the first creation?"* This is a challenge that forces every rational mind to pause. The first creation — bringing you into existence from nothing, when you were merely a drop of fluid, then a clot, then a fetus — was an act of absolute power that no one can deny. You did not create yourselves; you were created by a Will that transcends all limitations.

If Allah was able to originate creation from absolute nothingness — without any prior model, material, or example — then how could He be incapable of re-creating it after its decay and dispersal? The One who initiated is more than able to repeat, and indeed, repeating is easier than originating. This is a logical proof that leaves no room for excuse.

Yet, despite this clear reasoning, the verse continues: *"But they are in confusion about a new creation."* The problem is not with Allah's power; the problem lies within their own hearts. They are entangled in doubt and uncertainty, not because the evidence is weak, but because their arrogance and attachment to worldly life blind them. They find it strange that bodies, once turned to dust and scattered by the winds, could be gathered again — forgetting that the very dust they tread upon was once nothing, and the heavens and earth were created with far greater magnitude than their own re-creation.

This verse is a gentle yet firm reminder for every believer: if you truly reflect on your own existence — how you were nothing, then became something — you will find in that the clearest proof that your Lord, who began your journey, will also complete it. The Resurrection is not a distant impossibility; it is a promise from the One whose word is truth. So let not the whispers of doubt shake your certainty, for the same Hand that shaped you in your mother's womb will raise you again on the Day when all secrets are laid bare.

O servant of Allah! Let this verse strengthen your faith. When you see the cycle of life and death in nature — the dead earth springing to life with rain, the seed breaking through the soil — know that your Creator is showing you a preview of your own return to Him. Do not be among those who are "in confusion," but rather be among those who see with the eyes of the heart, who affirm that Allah is over all things competent. The resurrection is not a matter of "if" but of "when," and that "when" is closer than you think. Prepare for it, for the One who created you the first time has promised to bring you back — and His promise is ever true.
