Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Tanqusu (تَنقُصُ): What diminishes or decreases — here, what the earth consumes and erodes from the human body after death.
- Hafeez (حَفِيظٌ): Preserved, protected — a record that is safeguarded from loss, alteration, or error.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, the Most High, addresses the doubt and denial of those who question the resurrection of the dead. They wonder how scattered bones and decomposed bodies could ever be brought back to life. In response, Allah declares: "We have full knowledge of what the earth diminishes of them" — meaning, We know precisely every particle of the body that the soil consumes, every cell that decays, and every fragment that disperses. Nothing is hidden from His infinite knowledge, whether it be the flesh that erodes, the bones that crumble, or the very atoms that mingle with the dust.
And then Allah adds: "And with Us is a preserved Book" — the Preserved Tablet (al-Lawh al-Mahfuz), which is protected from any change, distortion, or loss. It contains the complete record of every person, every deed, and every detail of their existence — both in life and after death. This Book is comprehensive, missing nothing, and immune to the interference of devils or the passage of time.
This verse is a direct and powerful response to the skeptics who find it impossible that Allah could reassemble what has been scattered. It reassures the believer that the One who created humanity from nothing is fully capable of recreating it, and that His knowledge encompasses even the tiniest trace of what the earth takes away.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder the greatness of this divine assurance. The very earth that receives our bodies is under His command, and every atom that returns to the soil is known to Him by number and measure. If He knows what the earth consumes, then He certainly knows how to restore it. This is not a matter of difficulty for the Lord of the worlds — it is a promise of perfect justice and mercy. So let your heart find peace in this truth: your Lord has not forgotten you, and nothing of you is lost to Him. The preserved Book is a witness to your deeds, and the Day of Return is a certainty. Embrace this faith with confidence, for the One who knows all things is the One who will bring you back — not to punish unjustly, but to reward with grace and to settle all accounts with perfect fairness. Turn to Him now, before that Day arrives, and let this knowledge draw you closer to His mercy and His everlasting paradise.
