Surah Qaf — Verse 5

• بَلْ (Bal): Rather/nay – a particle of transition indicating a shift from a previous point.
• بِالْحَقِّ (bil-Ḥaqq): The Truth – referring to the Qur’an and the message of Islam brought by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
• لَمَّا جَاءَهُمْ (lammā jā’ahum): When it came to them – i.e., at the moment the truth reached them.
• مَرِيجٍ (marīj): Confused, disturbed, disordered, or unstable – a state of turmoil and inconsistency.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse exposes the stubbornness of the disbelievers of Makkah. When the Qur’an – the absolute truth from Allah – came to them through the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), they did not receive it with open hearts or sound reasoning. Instead, they rejected it outright. Their rejection was not based on any genuine doubt or intellectual deficiency in the message itself, but rather on arrogance, stubbornness, and a refusal to submit to the truth.

Because they turned away from the truth, they fell into a state of marīj – a deep confusion and instability. They could not settle on a single stance regarding the Qur’an. At times they called it poetry, at other times magic, and sometimes they claimed it was the words of a soothsayer. Their opinions contradicted one another, revealing that their rejection was not rooted in logic but in a chaotic, unsettled mindset. They were like a ship tossed by violent waves, unable to find a stable course.

This verse serves as a powerful reminder that when a person rejects the truth that has been clearly presented to them, they lose their inner peace and clarity. Their hearts become restless, and their minds become entangled in contradictions. The truth, on the other hand, brings certainty, tranquility, and a firm foundation for life.
