Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- رَجْعٌ (Raj‘): Return, bringing back to life.
- بَعِيدٌ (Ba‘īd): Far-fetched, improbable, distant from possibility.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The disbelievers of Makkah, in their denial of the Resurrection, said in astonishment and mockery: "What! When we have died and become dust—shall we really be brought back to life? That is a return far from possibility!" They considered it utterly impossible that human bodies, after decomposing into the earth and mixing with it, could ever be reassembled and revived. Their statement reflects both their rejection of the Hereafter and their amazement at the very idea of life returning to decayed remains.
This verse captures their mindset: they measured divine power by their own limited human ability. They thought that what they could not imagine or achieve could never happen. Yet, the One who created them from nothing in the first place—and who created the heavens and the earth, the vast skies, and the ever-renewing cycles of life and death in nature—is fully capable of bringing them back. The very dust they point to as a sign of impossibility is the same material from which their bodies were originally formed, and the same earth that brings forth plants and life after every season of death.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect: Is it truly "far-fetched" for the Creator of the universe—who fashioned you from a drop of fluid, who gives life to barren land after rain, and who turns dry, dead earth into flourishing gardens—to bring you back once more? The One who began creation is more than able to repeat it. Your return is not a distant impossibility; it is a certain promise. Do not let your limited imagination confine the infinite power of your Lord. The same dust that you see as an end is, in truth, a beginning. Prepare for that return, for it is nearer to you than you think, and it is the moment when every soul will meet the justice and mercy of its Creator.
