Surah Adh-Dhariyat — Verse 48

Word Meanings:

• Farashnāhā (فَرَشْنَاهَا): We spread it out, leveled it, and made it like a bed or carpet for dwelling.
• Al-Māhidūn (الْمَاهِدُونَ): Those who make something smooth, level, and suitable for settling — i.e., the ones who prepare a comfortable resting place.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah draws our attention to one of His greatest signs: the earth beneath our feet. He says that He spread out the earth and made it like a soft, level bed for His creation — a place where humans, animals, and all living beings can settle, build, travel, and thrive. The earth was not left rugged and uninhabitable; rather, it was carefully prepared and smoothed out as a dwelling place, perfectly suited for life.

The phrase "فَنِعْمَ الْمَاهِدُونَ" (How excellent are We in spreading it out!) is a statement of praise from Allah about His own perfect handiwork. It expresses that no one can match Allah in preparing and leveling the earth for His creatures. This is not a mere coincidence or random accident — it is a deliberate, wise, and merciful act from the Creator.

When you walk on firm ground, sleep on a stable surface, plant your crops, or build your home, remember that this very earth was lovingly prepared for you by your Lord. The One who spread it out for you is the same One who provides for you, guides you, and will judge you. So let this reflection increase your gratitude and draw you closer to Him.

Da‘wah Reflection:

This verse invites us to look at the world around us with eyes of faith. The earth you stand on — its mountains, plains, valleys, and oceans — all were shaped and arranged by Allah with wisdom and mercy. If you truly ponder how the earth was made suitable for human life, you will find in it a clear proof of Allah’s existence, His power, and His care for His creation. And if Allah has been so kind as to prepare this earth for you as a comfortable bed, then how much more should you turn to Him in worship and obedience? Let the earth beneath your feet remind you of the One who spread it out — and let it lead you to thank Him, obey Him, and seek His pleasure. For the One who prepared this temporary home for you has also prepared an eternal home — Paradise — for those who believe and do righteous deeds. Will you not strive for it?
