Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Fākihah (فَاكِهَةٌ): Fruits of various kinds that people enjoy.
  • Al-Nakhl (النَّخْلُ): The date-palm tree, a blessed and noble tree.
  • Dhāt al-Akmām (ذَاتُ الْأَكْمَامِ): The sheathed spathes (coverings) from which the date clusters emerge — the protective husks that envelop the developing dates.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah continues to enumerate His countless blessings upon His creation, inviting us to reflect on the earth He has laid out and prepared for us. After mentioning that He set the earth for His creatures, He now draws our attention to what grows upon it: fruits of every kind and the date-palm with its sheathed spathes — the protective coverings from which the sweet, nourishing dates emerge.

The mention of fruits highlights the diversity and abundance of provisions Allah has placed on earth for our enjoyment and sustenance. Then, singling out the date-palm specifically, Allah draws our attention to a tree of extraordinary value. Its "akmām" (sheaths) refer to the spathe that encloses the flower cluster before the fruit appears — a remarkable sign of Allah's intricate design and care. The date-palm is not only a source of delicious food but also a symbol of generosity, patience, and blessing in Islamic tradition.

This verse invites us to pause and marvel at the Creator's mercy. Every fruit we taste, every date we enjoy, is a gift from the Most Merciful — a tangible proof of His love for His servants. When we eat from these provisions, we should remember the One who provided them, and let this remembrance fill our hearts with gratitude and draw us closer to Him in worship and obedience. Indeed, the One who created such perfect provisions for our bodies has also provided guidance for our souls — and both are signs of His infinite mercy.
