Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Ard (الأرض): The earth.
- Wada‘aha (وَضَعَهَا): He laid it down, spread it out, and made it level and firm.
- Al-Anam (الْأَنَامِ): All living creatures — humans, animals, and every being that dwells upon the earth.
Explanation of the Verse:
After mentioning the heavens and their elevation, Allah turns to the earth and tells us that He *placed* it — meaning He spread it out, flattened it, and made it suitable for life. He did not leave it rugged or unstable, but prepared it as a resting place for all creation. The word *al-anam* encompasses every living being: mankind, beasts, birds, and all creatures that move upon its surface.
This verse is a profound reminder of Allah’s mercy and wisdom. The earth is not merely a random mass of rock and soil; it is a deliberately designed habitat, perfectly suited for the needs of its inhabitants. Its mountains stabilize it, its valleys provide shelter, its plains allow cultivation, and its waters sustain life. Every detail of its structure points to a Creator who cares for His creatures and has prepared for them a home.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
When you look at the earth beneath your feet — the soil that grows your food, the ground that carries your steps, the vast landscapes that inspire awe — remember that this is not an accident. It is a gift from the Most Merciful, who says in this verse that He *placed* the earth *for you*. He did not need it, but He created it as an act of love and provision for His servants.
This should fill your heart with gratitude. Every time you stand on solid ground, you are standing on a sign of Allah’s care. Every meal you eat from the earth is a proof of His generosity. So let this verse draw you closer to your Lord — the One who spread the earth for you, and who will also spread His mercy over you if you turn to Him. Will you not thank the One who prepared your home before you even existed? Will you not worship the One who thought of your needs before you were born?
Indeed, the earth is not just a place to live — it is an invitation to know its Creator, to love Him, and to live in obedience to Him. For the One who placed the earth for you is the One who will also raise you from it on the Day of Judgment, to reward you for how you lived upon it.
