Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- آلَاء (Ālā’): The countless blessings, favors, and bounties of Allah.
- رَبِّكُمَا (Rabbikumā): Your Lord — addressed to both mankind and jinn.
- تُكَذِّبَانِ (Tukadhdhibān): You both deny or reject.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is a powerful rhetorical question directed at both humans and jinn, the two creations endowed with intellect and free will. Allah asks: "So which of the blessings of your Lord do you both deny?" The question is framed in a way that leaves no room for evasion — it challenges the listener to point out, if they can, any single blessing of Allah that they could truthfully reject.
The blessings of Allah are innumerable and manifest in every breath, every heartbeat, every provision, and every moment of existence. From the air we breathe to the earth that sustains us, from the guidance of faith to the promise of Paradise — all are gifts from the Most Merciful. The repetition of this verse throughout Surah Ar-Rahman serves as a rhythmic reminder, awakening the conscience to reflect on the overwhelming generosity of the Creator.
The address to "both of you" (thaqalān — the two weighty creations) emphasizes that neither humans nor jinn can claim ignorance of Allah's favors. Every creature, whether believer or disbeliever, enjoys His mercy in this world — the sun rises for all, rain falls for all, and sustenance is provided for all. Yet, despite this, some choose to deny His oneness, His messengers, or His promises of resurrection and recompense.
A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:
This verse is a gentle yet profound invitation to pause and count the blessings that surround us. If we were to attempt to enumerate them, we would fail, for they are beyond calculation. So how can we, in the face of such boundless mercy, turn away in denial? The question is not merely rhetorical — it is a call to awaken the heart to gratitude, to soften the soul with humility, and to recognize that every good thing we possess comes from Allah alone.
Let this verse be a mirror for your soul: if you are blessed with health, faith, safety, and provision, then do not let your tongue or your actions deny the Giver. Instead, let your life be a living testimony of thankfulness — through worship, obedience, and kindness to others. For the one who recognizes the blessings of Allah and responds with gratitude will find them increased, while the one who denies them only harms their own soul.
O mankind and jinn, the doors of mercy are open, and the blessings are flowing. Do not close your eyes to them. Embrace the truth, submit to your Lord, and taste the sweetness of a heart connected to its Creator. Indeed, the greatest blessing of all is the gift of Islam — the path that leads to eternal happiness in the Hereafter. So which of these blessings could you ever deny?
