Word Meanings:

  • Al-Jawāri (الْجَوَارِ): The ships that sail upon the sea.
  • Al-Munsha’āt (الْمُنشَآتُ): The raised and constructed vessels, built with planks fastened together, towering above the water.
  • Al-A’lām (الْأَعْلَام): Mountains; a reference to the great size and stature of these ships, which appear like moving mountains upon the waves.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah — the Most High — draws our attention to yet another of His magnificent signs in the universe: the ships that sail across the seas. These vessels, with their towering structures and raised sails, glide through the waters carrying people, goods, and provisions, serving the needs of humanity in countless ways. They are so vast and majestic that they resemble mountains moving upon the surface of the sea.

Allah alone — glory be to Him — owns these ships and controls their movement. It is by His will and His power that they float upon the water, for He has subjected the sea to mankind and granted them the knowledge and ability to construct such wonders. The verse reminds us that all of this is under His command: the winds that fill the sails, the currents that carry the vessels, and the safety of their journeys are all part of His divine plan.

This is a profound reminder of Allah’s mercy and generosity. He has not only created the heavens and the earth but has also made the sea a pathway for human benefit, enabling trade, travel, and connection between distant lands. Reflect upon the immense power of the Creator who holds these massive ships upon the water with His wisdom, and who protects them from the dangers of the deep.

A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:

When you see a ship sailing across the horizon, let it remind you of the greatness of Allah and His boundless care for His creation. He has given you the intellect to build, the resources to prosper, and the mercy to benefit from the sea’s treasures. So, turn to Him with a grateful heart, and let this sign increase your faith and love for your Lord. Indeed, in every wave and every voyage, there is a lesson for those who reflect: that Allah is the Most Powerful, the Most Merciful, and the One who deserves all praise and worship.
