Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- اللُّؤْلُؤ (Al-Lu'lu'): Pearls, the precious gems formed inside oyster shells.
- الْمَرْجَان (Al-Marjān): Coral, specifically the small red gem-like beads, or according to some scholars, small pearls.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, the Most High, informs us of yet another of His countless blessings upon humanity: "From both of them emerge pearls and coral." The pronoun "both of them" refers to the two seas mentioned in the preceding verses—the salty and the sweet, or the two bodies of water that meet yet remain distinct. Although pearls and coral are primarily found in saltwater, Allah attributes their emergence to "both" because when the two seas meet, they become, by His decree, as if they were a single entity, and His power operates over all of it. This is a vivid reminder that all treasures—whether from land or sea—are brought forth solely by Allah’s command and mercy.
From the depths of the oceans, Allah brings forth these exquisite jewels that adorn the necks of people, beautify their homes, and serve as a symbol of His artistic perfection in creation. The pearl, formed layer by layer in the darkness of the sea, and the coral, with its vibrant red hue, are not mere minerals—they are signs of a Creator who delights in beauty and generosity. He placed them in the most unexpected places—inside a humble oyster or on the seabed—to teach us that His treasures are hidden, waiting for those who seek them with patience and gratitude.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse invites us to pause and contemplate: if Allah has placed such precious gems in the depths of the sea, how much greater are the treasures He has prepared for His righteous servants in Paradise? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) told us that the tents of Paradise are hollowed out of pearls, and its soil is of musk and saffron. The pearls and coral of this world are but a faint glimpse of what awaits the believers. So, when you see a pearl or a piece of coral, let it remind you of your Lord’s boundless generosity, and let it inspire you to seek the eternal treasures of the Hereafter through faith, prayer, and good deeds. Indeed, the One who brought forth beauty from the dark sea is more than capable of bringing forth joy from your trials and reward from your patience.
