Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- آلَاء (Ālā’): The countless favors, blessings, and bounties of Allah.
- رَبِّكُمَا (Rabbikumā): Your Lord — addressed to both mankind and jinn (the two creations mentioned in this surah).
- تُكَذِّبَانِ (Tukadhdhibān): You both deny or reject — addressing the dual form for the two groups.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse is a powerful rhetorical question that Allah poses to both mankind and jinn, the two creations endowed with intellect and free will. After listing numerous signs of His power, mercy, and blessings throughout Surah Ar-Rahman — from the creation of the heavens and the earth, to the sun and the moon, to the fruits and provisions, to the very breath in your lungs — Allah turns to His servants and asks: "So which of the favors of your Lord do you both deny?"
The question is not seeking information, for Allah knows all. Rather, it is a profound reminder that pierces the heart. It challenges every soul to reflect: among all the blessings you enjoy — your health, your sight, your hearing, your family, your sustenance, the very air you breathe — which one can you honestly say is not from your Lord? Which one do you dare to deny?
This verse comes after descriptions of the great events of the Day of Judgment and the blessings of Paradise, and it also follows warnings of Hellfire. So the meaning extends to: after all these clear signs and warnings, which of Allah’s favors — whether in this world or the next, whether His mercy or even His justice — will you reject?
The repetition of this verse throughout the surah (31 times) is a rhythmic call to gratitude and faith. It awakens the conscience and softens the heart, urging every listener to acknowledge that every single blessing comes from Allah alone — and that denial of even one is an act of ingratitude.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause for a moment. Look at your hands, your eyes, your heart beating without your command. Think of the food that reaches your table, the water you drink, the air you breathe. Think of the faith in your heart that guides you toward truth. Every single one of these is a favor from your Lord — countless, overwhelming, and undeserved. So which of these favors could you ever deny? Let this question echo in your soul and transform your heart into one that is grateful, humble, and devoted to the One who gave you everything. Indeed, the greatest of all His favors is the gift of Islam and the guidance of the Qur’an — so hold fast to it, and let your life be a living answer of gratitude to your Most Merciful Lord.
