Explanation of the Verse:
On that tremendous Day — the Day when the heavens are rent asunder and all creation stands before its Lord — neither human nor jinn will be asked about their sins in the way one asks to be informed of something unknown. Why? Because Allah, the All-Knowing, already knows every deed, every hidden thought, and every secret intention. Nothing escapes His knowledge — not the whisper of a heart, not the glance of an eye, not the smallest atom's weight in the heavens or the earth.
The believers will be recognized by the marks of their prostration — the brightness of their faces and the light of their faith shining upon them. The disbelievers and criminals will be known by their very features, darkened and humiliated. There will be no need for interrogation or investigation, for the Lord of the Worlds is fully aware of all that was done.
However, this does not mean there will be no questioning at all. Rather, the questioning mentioned here is the question of inquiry and discovery — that is removed. But there will be a different kind of questioning: the question of rebuke and reproach. The wrongdoers will be asked, "Did you not receive warnings? Did you not hear the messengers? What prevented you from believing?" — not because Allah needs to know, but as a means of establishing the proof against them and increasing their regret and sorrow.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, contemplate the majesty of this scene! The Lord who created you knows you better than you know yourself. He has recorded every moment of your life, every choice you made, every word you uttered. Nothing is hidden from Him. Yet, in His infinite mercy, He gave you a lifetime to return to Him, to seek His forgiveness, and to mend your ways.
Today, you have the opportunity to stand before Him as a believer whose face shines with the light of faith — not as a criminal whose features betray their guilt. The door of repentance is open. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Your Lord extends His hand by night so that the sinner of the day may repent, and extends His hand by day so that the sinner of the night may repent" (Sahih Muslim). Do not wait until that Day when no question will be asked because the answer is already known — and the record is sealed.
Let this verse awaken your heart. Turn to your Lord now, in the quiet of this moment, and say: "O Allah, I have wronged myself, so forgive me." For He is the Most Merciful, the Oft-Forgiving, and He loves those who repent.
