Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Yatoofoona (يَطُوفُونَ): They go around, circle, or move back and forth between two places.
  • Hameem (حَمِيمٍ): Extremely hot water or boiling liquid.
  • Aanin (آنٍ): Reaching the ultimate degree of heat; scalding, boiling to the point of burning.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah describes the continuous torment of the wicked criminals in the Hellfire. They are not left in one state of punishment alone; rather, they are made to move back and forth between two terrible afflictions. On one side, they are engulfed by the blazing Fire, suffering its scorching flames and burning torment. On the other side, they are brought to a boiling, scalding liquid — water that has reached the absolute peak of heat — which is poured upon them or given to them to drink. This liquid is so intensely hot that it tears apart their intestines and internal organs, adding unbearable agony to their already excruciating punishment.

This oscillation between fire and boiling water means there is no rest, no relief, and no escape for them. Just as they might hope for a moment of respite from the flames, they are plunged into the searing liquid, and when they cannot bear that, they are returned to the Fire. It is a cycle of endless suffering designed to match the severity of their crimes and their stubborn denial of the truth in this worldly life.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this vivid description. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has warned us clearly so that we may never have to experience this reality. The torment of the Hereafter is not a distant myth — it is a certain truth, and the choice to avoid it lies entirely in our hands. Every moment we have in this life is an opportunity to turn back to Allah, to seek His forgiveness, and to live a life of obedience and righteousness. The same tongue that can utter words of denial and sin can also utter words of repentance and remembrance. The same heart that can harden in neglect can soften with faith and love for its Creator.

Do not wait until the Fire is before your eyes and the boiling water is your only drink. Today, the doors of repentance are wide open, and Allah’s mercy is greater than His wrath. He calls you to Paradise, where rivers flow beneath gardens of eternal bliss — a reward far greater than anything this world can offer. So race toward His forgiveness, embrace His guidance, and let the warning of this verse be the spark that ignites a sincere change in your life. For the wise one is he who learns from the warnings of others, and the successful one is he who acts before the time of action has passed.
