Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- آلاء (Ālā'): The countless blessings, favors, and bounties of Allah.
- تُكَذِّبَانِ (Tukadhdhibān): You both deny or reject (addressed to both humans and jinn).
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is a powerful rhetorical question directed at both humankind and the jinn, the two creations endowed with intellect and free will. Allah asks: "So which of the blessings of your Lord do you both deny?"
The repetition of this verse throughout Surah Ar-Rahman serves as a profound reminder that every single blessing we enjoy—from the breath we take, to the sun that rises, to the mercy that surrounds us—is a gift from Allah alone. The question is not seeking an answer, but rather challenging us to reflect: Can you point to even one blessing that is not from your Lord? Can you deny the rain that falls, the food that sustains you, the eyes with which you see, or the heart that beats within you?
This verse addresses both humans and jinn equally, emphasizing that Allah's mercy and blessings encompass all of creation. The use of the dual form "you both" highlights that neither species can claim independence from Allah's care, nor can they escape His grace.
The rhetorical nature of this question leaves the listener with an undeniable truth: there is nothing we can deny. Every blessing points to its Giver. Every favor testifies to His generosity. The verse awakens the conscience to gratitude, urging us to acknowledge the endless flow of divine kindness that surrounds us at every moment.
Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and consider: How many blessings have you received today alone? The air in your lungs, the ability to read these words, the safety of your home, the love of your family—each one is a treasure from your Lord. When you recognize these blessings, your heart naturally fills with love for the One who gave them. And when love fills the heart, obedience follows, and gratitude becomes a way of life. Let this verse be a mirror for your soul: every time you hear it, let it renew your awareness of Allah's boundless mercy, and let your tongue respond with praise, not denial. For the One who blesses you endlessly deserves your endless gratitude.
