Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Rujjat" (رُجَّتْ): To be shaken violently, with intense and repeated convulsions.
- "Rajjan" (رَجًّا): A severe, powerful shaking that causes fragmentation and destruction.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse paints a vivid scene of the Day of Judgment, when the earth—the very ground we walk on, which seems so solid and stable—will be shaken with an overwhelming, violent tremor. It will not be a gentle quake, but a catastrophic convulsion that shatters its structure entirely. The mountains will crumble into fine dust, scattered by the wind, and the earth’s surface will be turned upside down. This is a moment of absolute upheaval, where every foundation we rely upon in this worldly life is destroyed, signaling that the present order has come to an end and the eternal reality has begun.
This shaking is not random or purposeless; it is a direct command from Allah, the Almighty, who has full power over His creation. It serves as a stark reminder that this world is temporary and will not last forever. The very earth that we till, build upon, and sometimes take for granted will one day bear witness to the truth of Allah’s promise. For the believer, this verse is a call to reflect: if the earth, with all its firmness, can be reduced to dust in an instant, then how can we rely on anything other than Allah? It urges us to prepare for that inevitable day—through sincere faith, righteous deeds, and turning back to our Creator—so that when the earth shakes and all else crumbles, our hearts remain firm in the remembrance of Allah and our deeds weigh heavy in the balance.
