Surah Al-Waqi'ah — Verse 42

Word Meanings:

• سَمُومٍ (Samūm): A scorching, intensely hot wind that penetrates the pores of the skin, reaching the very core of a person. It is the fiery breath of Hell that sears everything it touches.
• حَمِيمٍ (Ḥamīm): Boiling water, heated to the utmost degree, so scalding that it burns the face and tears the intestines when consumed.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse paints a vivid and terrifying picture of the punishment awaiting the companions of the left hand—those who rejected the truth and lived in defiance of their Creator. Their abode is one of torment, where the very air they breathe is a scorching wind that burns their lungs and penetrates their bodies through every pore. There is no respite, no cool breeze, no relief—only the relentless, suffocating heat of Hellfire.

Alongside this, they are given ḥamīm—water boiled to its absolute limit. When they drink it out of desperate thirst, it scalds their faces and rips through their entrails, adding to their agony. This is not a punishment of a single moment, but an eternal state of suffering, where every element of their environment is designed to inflict pain.

The verse serves as a stark warning: the pleasures of this world, if pursued in disobedience to Allah, lead to a reality far removed from comfort. Yet, in His infinite mercy, Allah has sent this warning through His Messenger ﷺ so that we may turn back to Him before it is too late. The door of repentance remains open, and the path to Paradise is paved with deeds that please Him—deeds of faith, patience, and righteousness.

Reflection and Call:

How merciful is our Lord, that He describes these horrors in detail so that we may avoid them! He does not wish to destroy us, but to save us. Let this verse awaken our hearts: every sin we cling to, every command we neglect, is a step toward this scorching wind and boiling water. But every sincere return to Allah, every prayer, every act of kindness, is a step toward gardens of delight. Choose wisely, for the choice is yours—and the time is now.
