Word Meanings:

  • Mulk (مُلْكُ): Absolute sovereignty, ownership, and full authority to govern and dispose of all affairs.
  • Yuhyī (يُحْيِي): He gives life — bringing living beings into existence from nothing, and resurrecting the dead.
  • Yumīt (يُمِيتُ): He causes death — taking away life at the appointed time.
  • Qadīr (قَدِيرٌ): Perfectly capable, with complete and unrestricted power over all things, nothing being beyond His ability.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse establishes the absolute and exclusive sovereignty of Allah over the heavens and the earth and everything within them. He alone is the true Owner and Disposer of all creation, managing its affairs with perfect wisdom and justice. No partner, no intermediary, and no rival shares in His dominion.

The verse then highlights two of His most significant acts of authority: giving life and causing death. He brings the living into being from nothing, and He takes life away at the precise time He has decreed. This cycle of life and death is a continuous sign of His power and a reminder that all affairs return to Him. In the context of the Hereafter, His power to give life also includes the resurrection of the dead for final accountability.

Finally, the verse declares that He is over all things Qadīr — perfectly capable. Nothing is difficult for Him, nothing escapes His knowledge, and nothing can hinder His will. Whatever He wills comes into existence, and whatever He does not will never occurs. His power is not limited by time, space, or circumstance.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, reflect on this magnificent truth: the One who owns the heavens and the earth, who gives you life every moment and will one day take it back, is the same One who has complete power over everything. This means that your affairs, your worries, your hopes, and your fears are all in the hands of the Most Capable. When you realise that no one else shares His dominion, your heart finds rest in trusting Him alone. When you remember that He gives life and causes death, you understand the purpose of your existence and prepare for the meeting with Him. And when you know that He is over all things capable, you turn to Him with sincere supplication, knowing that He can change your circumstances, forgive your sins, and grant you success in this life and the next. So submit your heart to the King of all kings, and you will find peace that nothing in this world can disturb.

📜 Verse 1-4 — Al-Hadid

Whatever is in the heavens and earth exalts Allah, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
His is the dominion of the heavens and earth. He gives life and causes death, and He is over all things competent.
He is the First and the Last, the Ascendant and the Intimate, and He is, of all things, Knowing.
It is He who created the heavens and earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne. He knows what penetrates into the earth and what emerges from it and what descends from the heaven and what ascends therein; and He is with you wherever you are. And Allah, of what you do, is Seeing.
