Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Nasū (نَسُوا): They forgot, neglected, or abandoned. In this context, it means they disregarded Allah's commands and rights upon them.
- Fa'ansāhum (فَأَنسَاهُمْ): So He made them forget. This is a divine recompense — because they forgot Allah, He caused them to forget themselves.
- Anfusahum (أَنفُسَهُمْ): Themselves — meaning their own souls' share of goodness, salvation, and true benefit.
- Al-Fāsiqūn (الْفَاسِقُونَ): Those who have deviated from obedience to Allah — the defiantly disobedient who have stepped out of the bounds of faith and righteousness.
Explanation of the Verse:
O believers, Allah warns you with a profound and sobering reminder: do not become like those who forgot Allah — those who neglected His rights, abandoned His commands, and turned away from His remembrance. They were so engrossed in worldly matters, their desires, and their sins that they lost all consciousness of their Lord. And because they forgot Allah, Allah made them forget themselves. This means He left them to their own devices, deprived them of the guidance that leads to their own true welfare, and sealed their hearts so they no longer knew what was good for their own souls. They became blind to their own interests in the Hereafter — they neither prepared for their graves nor worked for their salvation. They did not recognize their own worth, purpose, or the path that would lead them to eternal success.
These are the truly lost ones — the fāsiqūn, those who have fully deviated from the path of obedience to Allah and His Messenger. Their hearts have been sealed, and their deeds have become worthless, for they severed their connection with their Creator, and in doing so, they severed the very lifeline of their own souls.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse is a mirror for every soul. It teaches us a profound spiritual truth: the one who knows their Lord does not forget Him, and the one who remembers their Lord never loses themselves. When you are mindful of Allah — praying, giving charity, controlling your anger, fulfilling your duties — you are, in fact, taking care of your own soul. Every act of obedience is a gift you give to yourself. Every sin is a wound you inflict upon your own being.
So, dear believer, do not let the distractions of this world steal your heart from your Lord. Wake up each morning with the remembrance of Allah on your tongue, and let your day be guided by His commands. For the one who forgets Allah loses the most precious treasure — their own self. But the one who clings to Allah finds themselves, their purpose, and their eternal success. Let this verse be a gentle yet powerful call to return to your Lord, for in His remembrance, your heart finds peace, and in His obedience, your soul finds its true worth.
