The Tafsir (Explanation):
Imagine that moment — the Day when Allah gathers all of humanity and the jinn together before Him for final judgment. It is a scene of overwhelming magnitude, where every soul from the beginning of time until its end stands before its Creator. On that Day, Allah addresses the jinn directly with a tone of rebuke: "O assembly of the jinn! You have indeed misled a great multitude of humankind." The jinn, particularly the devils among them, had worked tirelessly to seduce humans away from the path of truth, whispering doubts, inciting desires, and beautifying sin until countless people followed them into ruin.
Then, the human allies of the jinn — those who had obeyed them, worshipped falsehood, and followed their whispers — respond to their Lord with a confession that reveals the tragic nature of their relationship. They say: "Our Lord, we have enjoyed one another." The jinn enjoyed the obedience and worship of humans, while humans enjoyed the fulfillment of their worldly desires and the false promises whispered into their hearts. The humans also acknowledge: "And we have reached our term which You appointed for us" — meaning they have now arrived at the Day of Resurrection, the promised meeting they had denied in their worldly lives. Their words carry a tone of regret and acknowledgment, but it is too late for excuses.
At this point, Allah's judgment is pronounced with absolute finality: "The Fire is your abode, abiding therein forever — except what Allah wills." The Fire becomes their permanent residence, a place of torment and punishment that they cannot escape. The exception — "except what Allah wills" — refers to the will of Allah regarding those among the monotheists who committed major sins and were purified by their punishment before eventually being brought out of the Fire by the intercession of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the mercy of Allah. As for the disbelievers and polytheists, their eternity in the Fire is certain and unending.
The verse concludes with a profound statement about Allah's attributes: "Indeed, your Lord is Wise and Knowing." He is Wise in all His decrees and actions — His punishment is perfectly just, His mercy is perfectly placed, and His timing is perfectly measured. He is Knowing of all the deeds of both humans and jinn, of their intentions, their hidden thoughts, and their open actions. Nothing escapes His knowledge, and His judgment is always based on perfect wisdom.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a powerful lesson for every soul. It reveals the dangerous alliance between humans and devils — how the whispers of the jinn find fertile ground in hearts that are distant from Allah. But it also reveals the boundless mercy of Allah, who leaves the door of exception open for those who believed in Him, even if they fell into sin. The believer who stumbles is not like the disbeliever who rejects. The Fire is not the final destination for the monotheist who sincerely repents and returns to Allah, for Allah's mercy encompasses all things.
Let this verse be a wake-up call: Do not let the whispers of the devils — whether from the jinn or from evil humans — lead you away from your Lord. Every moment you spend in obedience is a moment that distances you from the Fire. Every sincere repentance is a step toward the eternal gardens of Paradise. The Day will surely come when all will stand before Allah, and on that Day, the wise will be those who prepared while they had the chance. Allah is Wise in His judgment and Knowing of your efforts — so strive today, before the appointed term arrives, to be among those who hear the call of their Lord and respond with faith and obedience.
