Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Qarn (قرن): A generation or a community of people living in the same era.
- Makkanāhum (مكنّاهم): We empowered them, gave them authority and means of strength.
- Midrāran (مدرارًا): Abundant, continuous, and heavy rainfall.
- Ansha'nā (أنشأنا): We created, brought into being, or raised up.
- Ākharīn (آخرين): Others, another group.
Explanation of the Verse:
Have these people who deny the oneness of Allah and reject the message of His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) not learned a lesson from history? Do they not see how many powerful nations before them We destroyed—nations far stronger and more prosperous than they are? We had granted those nations such power, wealth, and resources in the earth as We have not granted you, O disbelievers of Makkah. We opened the gates of heaven for them, sending down abundant and continuous rain, and We made rivers flow beneath their dwellings, providing them with every comfort and means of prosperity. This was not out of love for them, but as a test and a gradual respite.
Yet, despite all these blessings, they turned away in ingratitude, rejected the messengers, and persisted in their sins. So We seized them with destruction because of their transgressions—not because We were unjust to them, but because they wronged their own souls. And after their annihilation, We raised up other generations to take their place, inheriting the earth and continuing the cycle of life.
This is the established way (Sunnah) of Allah with those who are ungrateful and rebellious. It serves as a powerful reminder that worldly power, wealth, and comfort are not signs of Allah's pleasure; rather, they can be a means of gradual punishment. The true measure of success lies in faith, gratitude, and obedience to the Creator.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart! The same Allah who destroyed those mighty nations is alive today, watching over all that exists. He is the One who gives power and takes it away, who grants wealth and withholds it. Do not be deceived by the temporary glitter of this world. The Quran is not merely a book of stories from the past—it is a living guide, filled with signs for those who reflect. Every nation that turned away from its Lord met a similar fate, and every generation that clung to faith found honor and peace.
Take heed before it is too late. The door of repentance is open, and Allah's mercy is vast. He who created you and provided for you is waiting for you to return to Him. Do not let pride or arrogance prevent you from submitting to the One who holds your very breath in His Hands. Indeed, in the destruction of past nations lies a profound lesson: that no power, no wealth, and no comfort can protect a people who abandon their Creator. But for those who believe and do righteous deeds, there is a reward that never ends—a life of contentment here and eternal bliss in the Hereafter.
