Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Tabarrūhum (تَبَرُّوهُمْ): To treat them with kindness, goodness, and benevolence; to do good to them.
  • Tuqsiṭū (تُقْسِطُوا): To act with justice and fairness; to give them their due rights in an equitable manner.
  • Al-Muqsiṭīn (الْمُقْسِطِينَ): Those who are just and fair in their words, deeds, and judgments.

Explanation of the Verse:

O believers, Allah does not forbid you from showing kindness, goodness, and justice toward those who have not fought against you because of your religion, nor have they driven you out of your homes. Rather, He permits you—and even encourages you—to treat them with benevolence, to maintain ties of kinship and good relations with them, and to deal with them fairly in all matters. This includes giving them their rights, fulfilling promises, and behaving with them in a manner that reflects the noble character Islam instills in its followers. Indeed, Allah loves those who are just and equitable in their dealings with all people, whether Muslim or non-Muslim.

This verse was revealed to clarify that the prohibition of taking disbelievers as allies and protectors—mentioned in the following verse—applies only to those who are actively hostile to the believers, who fight them for their faith, and who expel them from their homes. As for those who are peaceful and do not oppress the believers, Islam commands righteousness, justice, and kindness toward them. This is a beautiful manifestation of Islam's mercy and its call to uphold justice even with those who differ in belief.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a shining example of the magnificence of Islamic teachings and their profound mercy. Islam does not call for blind hatred or aggression toward all who differ in faith; rather, it establishes a clear and noble standard: kindness and justice for those who are peaceful, and firmness only against those who are aggressors. This is a religion that elevates the soul, purifies the heart, and builds a society founded on fairness and compassion. When you embody these values—being good to your neighbors, relatives, and all people of peace regardless of their faith—you are not only following the command of Allah but also presenting the true, radiant face of Islam to the world. Allah loves those who are just, and His love is the greatest reward a believer can aspire to. So strive to be among the just, and you will earn the pleasure of your Lord and the respect of all people.

📜 Verse 6-10 — Al-Mumtahanah

There has certainly been for you in them an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day. And whoever turns away - then indeed, Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy.
Perhaps Allah will put, between you and those to whom you have been enemies among them, affection. And Allah is competent, and Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
Allah only forbids you from those who fight you because of religion and expel you from your homes and aid in your expulsion - [forbids] that you make allies of them. And whoever makes allies of them, then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
O you who have believed, when the believing women come to you as emigrants, examine them. Allah is most knowing as to their faith. And if you know them to be believers, then do not return them to the disbelievers; they are not lawful [wives] for them, nor are they lawful [husbands] for them. But give the disbelievers what they have spent. And there is no blame upon you if you marry them when you have given them their due compensation. And hold not to marriage bonds with disbelieving women, but ask for what you have spent and let them ask for what they have spent. That is the judgement of Allah; He judges between you. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.
